LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena Volleyball fell 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 26-24) in the MAAC opener to league foe Marist. The Saints are now 21-8 in home openers.
Freshman outside hitter Nicole Deobler notched her first double-double of the season with 13 kills and 13 digs, while she also tallied six service aces. Dakota Jackson added 11 kills for the Saints (0-12, 0-1 MAAC).
The Red Foxes (4-8, 1-0 MAAC) were led by Megan Fergus who tallied 15 kills, while both Kelsey Ediger and Nikki DeSerpa added 13. Taylor Van der Biezen recorded 40 assists for Marist.
Coming from down 24-17, the Saints were determined to take the set from the Red Foxes in the first set. Behind the serving of Deobler, the Saints were able to stop the match point as they went on a 6-0 run to trail just 24-23. However, Fergus was able to give Marist the final point of the set to go up 1-0 in the match.
Siena was down 10-5 early in the second set, which continued as the Red Foxes held onto a 16-9 lead. The Saints began to make their comeback and trailed just 19-16 late in the set. Marist would not quit and went up 2-0 in the match with a 25-21 second set victory.
Again behind the serving of Deobler, the Saints started the third set with a 7-1 lead, which included three service aces. Siena would hold onto the lead until the Red Foxes came back to tie the set up 19 all. It was then a back and forth set with the league foes exchanging points. With the set tied up 24-24, it would be Marist that would take the final two points to secure the three-set victory 26-24.
Siena hits the first leg of their Western New York trip on Saturday, Sept. 23 as they face Canisius. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
