Siena Volleyball dropped their conference matchup to Canisius 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-20) in the first leg of their Western New York Swing. The Saints are 0-2 in league play for the first time since 2003.
Samantha Pethokoukis led the Saints (0-13, 0-2 MAAC) on offense with six kills. Dakota Jackson, Antonija Ivanovic and Karli Rodriguez each recorded five kills.
Sara Wesley tallied 13 kills for Canisius (4-9, 2-1 MAAC). Cassidy Ceriani dished out 29 assists, while Donnett Hickson recorded 11 digs.
Both Canisius and Siena battled to start off the first set with neither team taking a clear lead. After a 6-1 run by the Golden Griffs, Siena trailed 16-10. The Saints fought hard to make a comeback, but Canisius took the first set 25-19.
The Golden Griffs used their momentum from the first set into the second set and quickly took a 14-5 lead. Siena came right back into it and trailed by just five, 16-11. Canisius would not be stopped and went up 23-15 before taking the second set 25-18.
Siena came out strong from intermission and went up 10-7 in the third set. Canisius came right back and after a 12-12 tie, the Golden Griffs ran away with a 16-12 lead. The Saints made their comeback down 24-17, but it was too late as Canisius took the final set and match 25-20.
The Saint hit the second leg of the Western New York trip on Sunday, Sept. 24 at Niagara. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
