Short-Handed Volleyball Fall to Defending MAAC Champs

Saints Fall to First-Place Fairfield in Conference Matchup

LOUDONVILLE, NY - With three notable starters missing from the starting lineup, the Siena Saints had a tough task of facing the three-time defending MAAC champion Fairfield Stags at the ARC on Wednesday night. Things did not swing the way of the Saints, as they would fall in straight sets 3-0.

Sophomore Dakota Jackson led the team on offense with seven kills, while hitting a solid .294 which was second-highest on the team for the match. Junior Justine Torre stepped up with seven digs and seven assists. Senior Annie Stock also chipped in with seven assists and a pair of kills to help facilitate the offense. Sophomore JoJo Ishida led the defense with a team-high 16 digs on the match.

For Fairfield (8-8, 7-0), Luci Albertson and Julia Kallen each pumped in nine kills apiece, as Albertson hit .533 while Kallen hit .444. Taylor Rudeen snagged 15 digs as the libero, and Sonja Radulovic and Alexis Rich each topped double-digit digs as well with 11 and 10 respectfully.

"The team did have numerous sustained rallies and even though the result was one-sided," said head coach Vilis Ozols. "We executed in numerous areas that we've been working at and a number of players did well in their roles."

While it was Siena who took an early lead 3-1, the Stags exploded with a 24-2 run to close out set one. The Saints would commit nine errors during the run leading to points for the Stags. Set two would be much of the same, as the Stags were able to score in chunks to gain a marginal lead. The Saints would give up 12 total errors in set two.

In set three, Siena would put up their best collective set of the night, as Stock and Torre would each grab half of their assists on the night in the set. However, two separate big runs by Fairfield gave them a 13-2 lead halfway through the set. However, Siena would climb back in as six different players would record at least one kill. However, things would end at 25-15, giving the Stags the 3-0 win.

The Saints return to the floor this Saturday afternoon, October 6 when they square off against Iona at home in the ARC. First serve goes up at 1 p.m.
