The Siena College Saints have picked their play up recently, and it all came to fruition with a commanding victory over the Manhattan Jaspers on the road by a final score of 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-12). The Jaspers took the previous matchup this season by the same score in Loudonville.
Siena (4-26, 2-15), was led on offense by sophomore
Brooke Rogers, who put up nine kills and five assisted blocks. Junior
Kelly Chaney also had a solid match with six kills, while senior
Antonija Ivanovic had seven kills and a team-high 10 digs. As a team, the Saints hit .361, which is the highest for the team in a single match this season. Sophomore
Jessica Eblin ran the offense with 26 kills.
For Manhattan (4-26, 2-15), they hit .086 as a team and collected 17 attack errors. Erin Hoener had seven kills while Vivian Donovan had six kills. Reyn Hoffman led the way on defense with nine digs.
"One of the things the team has been working on all season is focusing on the little things," said head coach
Vilis Ozols. "Today, the team did a magnificent job of focusing on the little things and that resulted in a big victory for them. As the statistics showed, everybody contributed to the win from the first touch defensive players to the setting to attackers."
The first set, both teams narrowly earned a lead at all, with the set being played within three points for a majority of it. Siena was able to jump ahead with a 23-20 lead late, before a pair of points brought Manhattan within a point at 23-22. The Saints then used back-to-back kills from Rogers and sophomore
Dakota Jackson to take the set 25-22 and go up 1-0.
Siena would use their momentum from the first set, and bring that to set two. With the score 19-14, the Saints saw senior
Katarina Nicic go off for three kills during a 6-0 run to take the set 25-14 and take a 2-0 lead. The green and gold stepped their game up even further, scoring early and often to take a 15-3 lead. From there, the Saints were able to close out the match with a 25-12 win in the set. The victory is their first three-set sweep since their first victory of the season over Lafayette.
The Saints return to the floor tomorrow, Sunday, November 11 when they head to Iona to wrap up the team's regular season. Iona clinched the top spot in the upcoming MAAC Championship on Saturday afternoon. First set on Sunday goes up at 1 p.m.
