Ivy Power Harvard Outlasts Women’s Basketball

Saints Start 0-3 for First Time Since 2015-16

LOUDONVILLE, NY – After a tough offensive night in their previous outing, the Siena Saints woes shooting the ball continued into Friday night's matchup with Ivy League power Harvard at the Alumni Recreation Center. Despite a second half push, the Saints shot just under 16 percent from the field in the first half which led to a 73-54 defeat at the hands of the Crimson.

With the loss, the Saints begin the season 0-3 for the first time since 2015-16. That season, the Saints lost five in a row before their first win, which came against Morgan State.

For Siena (0-3), senior Deja Rawls led the team in scoring with double-figures, putting up 10 points and dishing a team-high four assists. Junior Maddie Sims, sophomore Marilena Gerostergiou, and freshman Margo Peterson and Amari Anthony each chipped in with seven points apiece.

For Harvard (2-2), Jaydn Bush continued her double-double streak as she has done it all four games this season for the Crimson. Her 19 points, 11 rebounds led Harvard, as she went 9-for-11 from the floor. Nani Redford scored 11 points, and had eight rebounds as she was second in both those categories behind Bush. Sydney Skinner and Rachel Levy also scored in double figures for Harvard.

Siena struggled early on offense, as Harvard took advantage of that and opened up a double-digit lead in the first quarter. That lead would double by halftime, as Siena only converted one field goal from the field in the second frame, as Harvard took a 37-14 lead into the break.

The Saints would pick up their play in the second half, as they came out of the locker room as baskets from Gerostergiou and senior Joella Gibson got the scoring going. They would shoot nearly 47 percent from the field, compared to the 16 percent combined in the first half. That continued into the fourth quarter, highlighted by an 8-0 run mid-way through the fourth on back-to-back three pointers from Peterson and Anthony, and capped by a layup from Sims to bring a 23-point lead to a 15-point lead in a span of just over a minute.

Harvard scored 58 percent of their baskets from inside the paint, outscoring the Saints 42-26 down near the rim. Harvard also outrebounded the Saints, mostly on the offensive glass that led to a 21-7 point disparity in second-chance points.

The Saints return to the hardwood on Monday, Nov, 19 as they make their furthest trip of the year and head to Washington, DC to take on Howard University. Tip off on Monday is set for 7 p.m.
