Felicitations, Sabrina! Saints Grab Win Over Colgate

Piper Puts Up 30-Point Effort in Saints Victory

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Shooting 10-for-15 from the field, including a 4-for-6 night from behind the three-point arc, junior Sabrina Piper lit fire to the Alumni Recreation Center as she scored 30 points in aiding the Siena Saints to a 55-53 win over the Colgate Raiders Thursday night. Junior Maddie Sims scored the go-ahead bucket with 6.9 to play in regulation, sealing the deal after the Raiders missed a pair of free throws to tie the game with 0.3 seconds left on the clock.

Piper becomes the first Saint since Kollyns Scarbrough to score 30 points in a game. Scarbrough did it last season, on Jan. 13, 2018 when she dropped 32 points in a 65-57 loss to Canisius. Piper shattered her previous career-high of 18 points, which she recorded just a year ago, also against Colgate.

The Paris, France native also put up five rebounds, two blocks, and an assist on her stat line for the night. Sims followed suit with another double-digit point night, putting up 15 points and seven rebounds, falling just short of what would have been her third double-double in four games. Freshman Amari Anthony was strong on the boards, collecting seven rebounds to tie Sims for the team lead in the category.

Colgate was led by a 13-point night from Summer King, as she fell one rebound short of a double-double with nine. Haley Greer chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds. Albany native Mylah Chandler put up seven points, eight rebounds, and three steals in the Raiders effort. Colgate was stymied on the offensive side of the ball, as the Saints held the Raiders to just under 29 percent from the field in the second and third quarters.

The Saints came out scoring five points early thanks to a bucket from Sims and a three from Piper. Piper would pace the offense scoring nine in the first frame, knocking down another three pointer. However, Colgate went 7-for-15 in the quarter to take the early 17-12 advantage. Piper kept up her hot shooting in the second quarter, leading the Saints back from a 10-point deficit. Siena would chip away and end the first half with a run of their own, 11-2, to pull back within one, 26-25 going into the half.

Siena flipped the script and took control of the game in the third quarter. Piper knocked down a three just two minutes into the half to tie things at 30-30. After both sides traded buckets, back-to-back layups from Piper and Sims gave the Saints a three point lead, which they would keep until the final minute of regulation.

Going into the fourth with a four point lead, Siena got their lead up to as much as seven points, which came after back-to-back layups from Sims with just under five minutes remaining in the game. The Saints would fall cold from the field. Despite the array of missed shots, Siena still led by seven with 2:09 to play after Piper collected a pair of free throws. But a layup, three pointer, and layup created a 7-0 run, as the tying layup came with 30 seconds to play as Colgate knotted up the score at 53-53.

With the chance at the last shot, the Saints tossed the ball to Sims with seven seconds left, as she spun, drove to her left and tossed the ball up off the glass for the go-ahead score with 6.8 to play. As it looked Siena had won the game on Colgate's final possession, a foul was called with 0.3 seconds remaining on the clock, sending Haley Greer to the line with a chance to tie the game for the Raiders. She would miss her first free throw, and commit a land violation on the attempted miss and rebound to try and tie the game. Siena would grab the rebound, securing the program's third straight win over the Raiders.

Colgate outscored the Saints 40-30 in the paint, 19-13 on points off turnovers, 10-2 on second chance points, and bench points 12-3. However, the Saints were able to get to the free throw line, going 11-for-19, while Colgate only went 3-for-6 from the charity stripe.

The Saints return to the court this Saturday, Dec. 1 when they play their lone game at the Times Union Center and face Florida Atlantic in a doubleheader with the men. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m., while the men will follow at 3 p.m.
