Saints Take Down Canisius

LOUDONVILLE, NY - Siena Women's Basketball hits six free throws during the final 35 seconds to give the Saints a 68-59 win over Canisius. With the victory the Saints clinch the three-seed in the MAAC Tournament.

Kollyns Scarbrough tallied 17 points, which pushed her into #8 for All-Time Scoring for Siena (15-13, 10-7). The senior guard also grabbed eight rebounds, which pushed her into 9th in All-Time Rebounds with 705. Maddie Sims tallied 15 points, while Deja Rawls added 10.

Sara Hinriksdottir led all scorers with 20 points for Canisius (10-19, 8-10). Danielle Sanderlin recorded 16 points for the Golden Griffs while grabbing eight rebounds.

After a back-and-forth first quarter the two teams tallied their third tie, 9-9. Canisius then went on a 6-0 run to lead 15-9. The Golden Griffs held onto the lead for most of the frame despite the Saints shooting an impressive 50-percent (6-12). Jones' jumper put Siena ahead 16-15, but Hinriksdottir followed that up and pushed Canisius back ahead of Siena 17-16 after one quarter played.

The Saints kept battling as Scarbrough knocked down eight points in a two-minute span to put Siena ahead 24-21, a lead they would never relinquish. Scarbrough scored 12 of her 17 points in the second frame, while Canisius only scored eight points as a team on 4-10 (.400) shooting. The eight points allowed was the fewest since holding Monmouth to six on February 5.

Coming out of halftime with a 31-25 lead, Sims scored nine of her 15 points in the frame to help Siena take their largest lead of the game, 44-33. Siena held a slim 18-16 points advantage during the frame to hold onto a 49-41 lead after three quarters played.

Siena never wavered in the final frame despite a 7-1 run late in the quarter to trail by just three, 62-59. The Saints nine points scored from the charity stripe in the frame is the most since 13 made against Fairfield on January 22. Six of those nine free-throws made came in the final 35 seconds to help Siena secure their fourth-straight .500 or better league season.

Siena will take on Saint Peter's on Sunday, February 25 for their final game of the regular season at 2 p.m. Prior to tip-off the Saints will honor Aaliyah Jones, Margot Hetzke, Joella Gibson, Kollyns Scarbrough and Emmanuella Edoka for Senior Day.
