Volleyball Drops Season Opener at Loyola (MD)

Sophomores Shine in 3-1 Loss

Ann Ernst highlighted three Loyola (MD) players with double-doubles, posting 16 kills and 11 digs to lead the Greyhounds over Siena 3-1 (25-16, 29-27, 25-15, 25-16) in the season opening Baltimore Bash. Sophomores Dakota Jackson and Brooke Rogers each collected a team high eight kills apiece for the Saints.

"I thought the team showed some real positives even in the loss," said head coach Vilis Ozols. "We definitely showed some first game jitters but I'm confident that we'll get better with each game, because that's the nature of this team. Loyola did a good job of pressing their advantage, but I know we're a good team that will continue to grow and evolve."

Abby Hamilton (13 kills, 10 digs) and Molly Werts (25 assists, 13 digs) joined Ernst in posting double-doubles for the Greyhounds. Cat Vaccaro added 13 kills for Loyola, which hit just over 29 percent as a team, highlighted by a match-high 34 percent in the first set.

Rogers was the top player on offense for the Saints, hitting 58 percent on the match. Freshman Abby Huffman posted the second-highest kill total with six in her collegiate debut. Senior Antonija Ivanovic (13) and sophomore JoJo Ishida (15) each collected double-digit digs, while Jessica Eblin tossed out 29 assists.

Loyola used a 6-1 run to break open the first set to take a 15-9 advantage. The Greyhounds never led by fewer than five points the rest of the way, and scored the final four points to claim the opening set.

Siena would rally to tie the match following an epic 29-27 second set victory. Loyola had a chance to claim the set leading 25-24, however the Saints fended off match point thanks to a key kill from Huffman. Rogers and Jackson then capped the set with back-to-back kills to square the match.

However, Loyola would capture the next two sets to claim the match. In the third set, the Greyhounds used a pair of 6-1 runs to reclaim the overall lead. Siena took a 12-11 advantage in the decisive set, but Loyola responded with nine unanswered points to secure both the set and the match.

The Saints return to the court tomorrow for a pair of matches to conclude the Baltimore Bash. They will take on Towson at 12:30 p.m. and Radford at 5 p.m.
