LOUDONVILLE, NY – In front of a full house of just over 1,700 fans in their ninth annual Kids Day, the Siena Saints came back from a 13-point deficit and defeated the Manhattan Jaspers 62-56 in overtime Friday morning. With the win, the Saints remain undefeated in MAAC play at 3-0, and are one of only three teams left in the conference that have not lost a conference matchup.
Siena has now been winners of three of their last four Kids Day games, and won for the first time in consecutive years.
The Saints (7-7, 3-0) were led by juniors
Sabrina Piper and
Maddie Sims. Both combined for just over 66 percent of the teams total scoring on the day, as Piper dropped 21 points and four rebounds on 5-for-7 shooting from behind the arc. Sims filled the stat sheet with her fifth and MAAC-leading fifth double-double, scoring 20 points, career-high 13 rebounds, three blocks, two assists, and a steal. Her 20 points would be the fourth time this season, and in her career, she would eclipse the benchmark. Senior
Deja Rawls pumped in six points, as Rawls hit the go-ahead bucket in overtime. Rawls also added three assists, breaking a tie with Tehresa Coles to take over sole possession of 19
th overall on the team's all-time assists list.
Manhattan (2-12, 0-3) was led by the hot hands of Lynette Taitt and Lizahya Morgan, who each put up 12 points on the afternoon. Taitt finished two rebounds short of a double-double with eight, while Sydney Watkins finished with 11 points. Courtney Warley grinded out 11 rebounds, four steals, three assists, and three blocks for the Jaspers.
Siena began the game cold as ice from the floor shooting, putting up a dreary 16.7 percent on 2-of-12 shooting from the floor and 0-of-7 from three-point range. That allowed Manhattan to take an early lead after the first 10 minutes. Both sides duked it out in the second as each team scored a game-high 20 points in the quarter. Sims had 13 points to that point, but Manhattan's Morgan had gone 4-for-4 from distance in the first half to lead the Jaspers to a five-point lead at the half.
It looked for a moment that the Saints would take off in the third quarter, as Piper nailed a three to open the half and put Siena down by just two points. But Manhattan would respond and take advantage of an 11-0 run to take a 13 point lead at the halfway point in the third. But Piper would take over on offense, and the Saints buckled down on defense and made a run of their own, holding the Jaspers to one field goal over the final five minutes. Meanwhile, Piper would score eight points over the final five minutes, and a
Margo Peterson three-pointer at the buzzer brought the Saints within three points heading into the fourth.
Through the fourth, the lead for either side was never more than two points, as both sides also struggled to score. A layup from Piper with 1:35 to play gave Siena a 54-52 lead, which would be wiped away with a pair of free throws from Manhattan's Lynette Taitt to tie things up at 54-54 with a minute to play. Siena missed a chance to take the lead with 45 seconds to play, but an offensive rebound reset the shot clock. Manhattan would foul with 18 seconds to go, forcing the shot clock off and Siena to keep the basketball. With a chance to win it, Siena would turn the ball over with three seconds to play and give Manhattan a chance to win. A drive down the lane by Taitt would be stripped by Rawls, forcing overtime.
In overtime, the Saints held the Jaspers to just 1-for-10 shooting from the floor and only two points, as Rawls and Sims helped anchor a lead and keep it. Rawls put the Saints up for good with a circus layup with 1:53 to play, putting Siena up by a point and forcing a miss on the other end of the floor.
Despite being out-rebounded, especially on the offensive glass, Siena outscored Manhattan 11-9 on second chance points. The Green and Gold also outscored the Jaspers 22-18 in the paint.
The Saints return home to the ARC on Sunday, Jan. 13 when they host the Rider Broncs at 2 p.m. Both teams will come into the matchup undefeated in conference play.
