Niagara Falls at Siena in Rainy Mid-Week Tilt

The Saints Snapped a Three-Match Losing Skid With a 2-1 Victory

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Men's Soccer (5-8, 2-3) junior Alejandro Riquelme continued to add to his point total in 2019 Wednesday afternoon, cascading Niagara's defense with a go-ahead goal to give the Saints a victory at Hickey Field. Siena netted a goal in each half in its 2-1 victory over the Purple Eagles (4-8-1, 2-2-1), snapping a three-game losing skid and matching its win total from last season.

Playing at home for just the fourth time in 13 matches this season, Siena quickly erased a 1-0 deficit by capitalizing on an opportunity late in the first half. After going down following a blast from 10 yards out to give the visitors the lead in the 41st minute, sophomore Samuel Schwarz converted a penalty kick just over two minutes later following a hand ball in the box to tie it up entering the intermission.

The Saints continued to pepper Niagara with shot entering the second half, ultimately holding a 15-8 advantage despite attempting two fewer corner kicks and committing eight more fouls. Riquelme netted his league lead-tying sixth goal of the season in the 70th minute, chipping a pass from senior Conor McGlynn over the head of the Niagara keeper and into the goal.

With the goal counting for his 17th & 18th points of the season, Riquelme has now put up the most points in a Siena campaign since James Beeston scored six goals and added eight assists for 20 points across 18 matches in 2013. McGlynn totaled his 16th career assist in the win, moving him into a tie for fourth place in program history in helps alongside Tom Allen (2012-15, 16).

The Saints pulled out the win to extend their unbeaten streak over the Purple Eagles despite having to play a man down for the final nine minutes of the match due to a red card. The Green and Gold posted its second consecutive victory over Niagara, and extended its unbeaten streak to eight (7-0-1), dating back to 2012.

Riquelme led the way with six shots offensively, while sophomore Goalkeeper Greg Monroe made a pair of saves to improve to 4-8 on the season in-goal.

Following the victory, Siena will enjoy its bye weekend before continuing a stretch of four of its final six matches at home next week. The Saints will next how Rider at Hickey Field on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 3:00 p.m.
