The Siena Saints volleyball team had a a tough go of it on Saturday afternoon, as 33 total errors led to the Green and Gold falling to the Manhattan Jaspers on the road by a final of 3-0 (11-25, 24-26, 23-25).
Leading the Siena offense was junior
Dakota Jackson and freshman
Ally-Reese Williams, who each collected six kills on the afternoon. Freshman
Isabella Ultsch added five kills while hitting .500 on the match. Classmate
Maria Llinas ran the offense to the tune of 21 assists, while Williams added a team-high six digs as well. At the net, sophomore
Abby Huffman had her hand in the most blocks, with three assisted stuffs. As a team, the Saints had 23 total attack errors, with 10 service errors on the match.
Manhattan saw Julia Menocal lead the way with a match-high 13 kills on the afternoon, while Vivian Donovan had a solid afternoon with the second most kills for the Jaspers at seven, while putting up a team-high eight digs. Meagan Miller had a hand in five assisted blocks, and Julianne McKee ran the Jasper offense with 28 assists.
"Manhattan played well today and it seemed like every time it looked like we'd get it going either they made a great play or there would be an unforced error," said head coach
Vilis Ozols. "We have the ability to play better and we need to bring both emotional energy and execution more consistently."
The first set was all Manhattan, as the Saints couldn't get anything going offensively. The Jaspers took an early 19-7 lead thanks to 11 Siena attack errors to that point. That would take the pressure off the Manhattan offense, who took the first set win by a commanding 25-11 score.
Siena came out strong in the second set, but would be matched point-for-point by the Jaspers. Both Williams and Jackson would get going and would aid the offense throughout the set. Jackson came up with a big kill late, tying things up at 23-23 giving the Saints momentum to take the set. But Manhattan had an answer, as Kelly Markowski notched one of her four kills to give the Jaspers the 24-23 advantage. A Manhattan service error evened things back up at 24-24, but then Menocal and a Siena attack error gave the Jaspers the two points they needed, putting them up 2-0 with the 26-24 win in the set. The third set would be the same setup, as it wouldn't take extra points as the Jaspers finished off the match with a 25-23 win, taking the 3-0 win.
The Saints return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 20 when they head over to New Rochelle to take on Iona. The match is an expected late afternoon start, with first serve going up at 5 p.m.
