LOUDONVILLE, NY - Sophomore
Maddy Dunigan broke out with a new career-high in kills on Saturday afternoon, as she exploded for 16 kills and six blocks en route to the Saints defeating the Saint Peter's Peacocks by a final score of 3-1 (25-23, 24-26, 25-15, 26-24) in the Alumni Recreation Center. The Saints have now won both of their matchups so far this season with Saint Peter's.
Behind Dunigan's strong performance was fellow sophomore
Abby Huffman, who tied a season-high with 11 kills, and added a pair of aces and assists to her resume on the day. Freshman
Ally-Reese Williams and
Maria Llinas each put up a double-double in the winning effort, as Williams tossed in 13 kills and 17 digs for the Green and Gold while Llinas ran the offense with 48 assists and 13 digs. Freshman
Isabella Ultsch also hit double-figure kills, putting up 12 on the afternoon, while
Madoka Weldon and
Gracie Halley each snagged double-digit digs with 15 and 13, respectfully.
For Saint Peter's, Alanis Alvarado put up a match-high 17 kills and 11 digs for a double-double. Libero Karla Seda snagged 19 digs, leading five different Peacocks that put up double-digit digs. Danielle Lopez put up eight kills, as she paired with Wildalys Soto to each put a hand in five blocks.
"There were so many positives in the match," said head coach
Vilis Ozols. "Saint Peter's is a great defensive team, so for us to both out dig them and to have four players with double-digit kills and four players with double-digit digs speaks to the teamwork shown today."
In the first set, the Saints took advantage of multiple Saint Peter's errors, and converted on offense to open an 18-8 lead. However, Saint Peter's would close the gap and pull within two as the Siena held onto a 23-21 lead. After an attack error by the Peacocks to bring the set to match point, they would make up for it with a pair of points to come back within one, as the Green and Gold led 24-23. However, Huffman would step up and close the set with a kill to take the 25-23 win.
Set two would see Siena grab another lead, getting out to an 18-11 lead. Despite a 5-0 to get to that point, Saint Peter's chipped away once again but was once more on the brink as a kill by Huffman made the score 24-21 in favor of the Saints. However, the Peacocks rolled with five straight points as they struck with three kills, a service ace, and a Siena attack error would give Saint Peter's the 26-24 win to tie things at 1-1. However, the Saints would roll in the third set with a .533 attack percentage and 19 total kills to take a 25-15 win and a 2-1 lead headed to the fourth set.
Dunigan would take off in the fourth set, as she stepped up for major points despite Saint Peter's leading from the opening rallies in the set. A late Siena attack error put the Saints in trouble, as Saint Peter's took their biggest lead of the set at 22-17. A kill by Dunigan kicked the Saints back into gear, snagging a pair of points before the Peacocks but another on the board. With the score 23-19, Dunigan put up another two kills amist a Siena 4-0 run to tie the match at 23-23. After a Siena service error, Dunigan lashed another kill to tie things back up at 24-24 before a pair of attack errors by Saint Peter's clinched the match for the Saints.
Siena returns to the floor tomorrow, Sunday, October 27 when they take on the Rider Broncs at the Alumni Recreation Center. The opening serve for the matchis set for 1 p.m.
