Saints Downed in Straight Sets By the Red Foxes

The Siena Saints went south to Poughkeepsie on Friday night for their only MAAC matchup of the week, and fell to the Marist Red Foxes by a final score of 3-0 (23-25, 22-25, 17-25). Junior Dakota Jackson led the way with eight kills on offense for the Saints, while Niki DeSerpa collected a match-high 18 kills for Marist.

Backing up Jackson's offense for Siena was six kills from freshman Ally-Reese Williams, while classmate Maria Llinas turned out a double-double with 23 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore Maddy Dunigan was a wall at the net, having a hand in six of Siena's nine team blocks on the match. However offensievely, the Saints only hit .116 as a team on the night.

DeSerpa would go on to hit a .375, getting her 18 kills on only 32 attempts. Megan Fergus would also add in nine kills, and Sarah Austin chipped in with five. Defensively, Sophie Theriot had a team-high 14 digs, and Stephanie Stone had a hand in four blocks. As a team, the Red Foxes had 21 attacking errors.

It would be a slow start for the Saints in the first set, as they fell behind early and ended up in a 20-13 hole. After a Siena timeout, the Saints ran off six straight points to get back into the set. Dunigan got the ball rolling with a kill, and the 6-0 run would end will a kill from Williams as the score stood 20-19. Marist ended the run with a pair of points, but would give them right back as they committed four straight errors to give Siena their first lead of the match at 23-22. But that would end the scoring for the Saints, as the Red Foxes used a Siena error to tie the game, a service ace to set up match point, and a kill from DeSerpa to clinch the set and take a 1-0 lead.

The second set would be a back and forth affair throughout most of it, as the Saints would take an 18-16 lead midway through. Marist would burn through both of their timeouts within just four rallies, as the Saints maintained a two point lead at 20-18. But after their second called timeout, the Red Foxes came back and would score seven of the last nine points in the set to take the 25-22 win to go up 2-0 in the match. The Red Foxes would own the third set, as DeSerpa would smack nine of her 18 kills in the third set to clinch the match for Marist. They would take the third set 25-17, giving them the straight sets win.

The Saints return to action next Saturday, October 12 when they come back to Loudonville and face Niagara in the Alumni Recreation Center. First serve next week is slated for 1 p.m.
