Volleyball Topped by Niagara to Finish Weekend

Guidarelli Solid as Saints Fall to Purple Eagles

With the chance to sweep a MAAC weekend up for grabs on Sunday afternoon, the Siena volleyball program missed on the opportunity to take both matches of a weekend for the first time this season. They would fall to the Niagara Purple Eagles by a final score of 3-0 (16-25, 22-25, 22-25).

Siena's top individual performance came from freshman Sol Guidarelli, as she came a pair of kills away from a double-double, finishing with 10 digs and eight kills. Sophomore Abby Huffman had another solid match with a team-high 10 kills, and freshman Isabella Ultsch adding nine kills. Maria Llinas tossed out 32 assists with eight digs, and Gracie Halley would end up with nine digs.

Niagara was led by a double-double from Jaycie Roberts, who scored 14 kills and 14 digs to lead the Purple Eagles. Caroline Leitch also chipped in 11 kills and 12 digs for a double-double as well, while Grace Hetterscheidt smacked 12 kills with eight digs as the trio accounted for all but five of Niagara's kills. Libero Emilie Wright led the Purple Eagles defensively with 16 digs.

"That was a tough loss because we had our chances and played well enough to keep it close," said head coach Vilis Ozols. "I feel like if we had committed a few less errors at key points, that would have made a big difference. We are playing well going into the final playoff run, and these next three matches will be key."

After a tough first set loss by a score of 25-16, Siena made their effort to tie things up in the second set. Niagara would hit 15 kills for a .250 attack percentage in the first, and would carry their momentum over to the second set. The Purple Eagles were able to score in spurts, despite the Saints doing their best effort to keep things close. With the set score 20-16 in favor of Niagara, Siena would score of four of the next five rallies to come back within one at 21-20. But a pair of Siena mistakes gave the Purple Eagles a three-point lead, which would get finished off by a pair of kills by Leitch to give Niagara the 25-22 win, and 2-0 lead.

In the third, Siena came out of the gate strong to a 13-11 lead as Ultsch broke an 11-11 tie with back-to-back kills. But a 5-0 Niagara run flipped the script, as they would snag 11 of the next 13 points to take a 20-15 lead. A small rally by the Green and Gold would get them back within two points at 21-19, keeping the match alive. But both sides went point for point until Niagara snagged number 25 on a kill by Hetterscheidt to clinch the win.

The Saints return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 13 when they had to Quinnipiac to take on the Bobcats. Opening serve for the match goes up at 7 p.m.
