Women’s Basketball Suffers Setback Against Fairfield

Saints Drop Matchup to Stags Amidst Home Stand

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Redshirt senior Aaliyah Jones knocked down a team-high 17 points, but the Siena Saints would struggle as a team to find the hoop as they fell to the Fairfield Stags by a final score of 66-40 at the ARC Thursday night.

Siena (10-15, 6-8) was led by Jones, with junior Maddie Sims putting in nine points. Junior Sabrina Piper collected eight points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Lala Watts put in four points, four rebounds, and two blocks.

Fairfield (8-16, 5-8) took advantage of Siena turnovers, scoring 24 of their points off turnovers. They were led by a 21-point night from Lou Lopez-Senechal, who fell just short of a double-double with nine rebounds as well.

It was all Jones in the first quarter, as she got the ball rolling for the Green and Gold early. She flew out of the gate, draining her first five shots, including three from distance for 13 points in the first seven minutes of play. Her hot shooting, and four points from Watts gave Siena a 19-12 lead after the first quarter. However, the Saints would go the other way on offense in the ensuing quarter, putting up only four points in the second 10 minutes. That would give Fairfield a 32-23 lead at halftime.

Fairfield would build on their halftime lead, getting ahead by as much as 17 points with 4:21 remaining in the third quarter. However, Siena would gain some momentum behind a trio of layups from Sims to put up an 8-0 run and trail by nine heading into the fourth quarter. However, Siena would once again struggle to find the hoop, getting outscored 19-2 in the final quarter in the loss.

Siena shot just 24 percent from the field over the final three quarters, as it would be the third time this season the Green and Gold would be held to 40 points or fewer.

The Saints return home to the ARC on Saturday, Feb. 16 when they play host to Niagara in game three of a three-game home stand. Tip-off for the matchup will commence at 2 p.m.
