Softball Concludes Opening Weekend Play With Win Over North Florida

Saints Finish First Tournament With 2-3 Mark For First Time In Three Seasons

Junior Maddie McMahon continued a successful start to her 2019 season for Siena Softball, tossing six strikeouts in a complete game in the circle as the Saints defeated North Florida, 4-1, Sunday afternoon to conclude play at the Madeira Beach Invitational II in Madeira Beach, Florida.

The contest marked just the second time in program history that the two teams faced off in competition, with Siena (2-3) evening the all-time series at one win apiece. The victory wipes away a three-game losing skid for the Saints and signals the first time since 2016 that the team has walked away from its opening weekend tournament with multiple victories, last doing so at 2016's Madeira Beach Invitational.

North Florida (7-6) got on the board first to begin the afternoon, with senior Navie Penrod scoring off a fielder's choice bunt in the home half of the first inning. From there, the Saints put up four unanswered runs to take control of the contest, with McMahon retiring 10 batters in a row between the second and the fifth in her first complete game of the 2019 season after tossing seven in each of her first two campaigns.

Siena's crooked number in the third inning began with freshman Yamila Evans, who collected her first collegiate hit and RBI with a single to right field, allowing senior Jess Vollmer to tie the game at 1. Junior Madysen Cossack then gave the Saints the lead with an RBI two-bagger to center that pushed in Evans and junior Patricia Kalesse. Junior Amanda Dodson plated an insurance run in the following frame. Popping a single to short that drove home freshman Natalie Marchese for her first collegiate run scored.

Through the first five games of the season Cossack is already threatening to force a major re-write of the program's career record book. The two-time First Team All-MAAC selection moved into a tie for third place all-time in walks (64) with Jessika-Jo Sandrini (2011-14), and took over sole possession of fourth in RBI (108) over Sandrini and passed former teammate Paige Hess (2015-18) and Sarah Rose (2002-05) for fourth all-time in total bases (260). Furthermore, Cossack entered the program's top-10 in hits, matching Melanie Kalesse (2013-16) with 155, and moved closer to tying Shannon Jones (2010-13, 51) for the program record in doubles, adding three bring her total to 48.

Following its first weekend of competition in 2019, Siena will remain in Florida for the duration of the week and will pick pack up in the Sunshine State for more action, playing in the Madeira Beach Invitational III next weekend. The Saints will take on Central Michigan, Presbyterian, Florida International, Florida A&M and Georgia Southern as the season continues.
