With the regular season slate winding down for the Siena Saints, they faced the Rider Broncs in their final road game of the season on Thursday night. Things would not fall in favor of the Saints, as they were defeated by the Broncs by a final score of 77-54. Junior
Maddie Sims collected her seventh double-double of the season.
Sims led the Saints (12-16, 8-9) with 16 points and 10 rebounds, as she put up her MAAC leading seventh double-double. Sims also added a pair of steals and two blocks. Redshirt senior
Aaliyah Jones also was strong, scoring 12 points in just over 15 minutes on the floor. Junior
Sabrina Piper also added eight points for the Saints while tossing out a team-high three assists.
Rider (17-11, 13-4) by a 19-point night from Lexi Posset, as she went 7-for-14 from the floor. Lea Favre would nab a double-double as well, scoring 18 points with 13 rebounds. Amari Johnson added 16 points off the bench for the Broncs, while Stella Johnson dished out five assists with four points.
Siena came out of the gate with some early buckets, highlighted by a three from Jones to kickstart the game. The Saints would take an early 7-4 lead after a Piper basket. However, the Saints would score one more field goal in the quarter while Rider built a 20-10 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Sims would begin her prowess on offense in the second quarter, as she scored 10 of her 16 points in the second frame. Siena would put up a fight, as they came back within single digits after freshman
Amari Anthony caught a long pass from
Joella Gibson, spun, and converted a layup with 2:53 to play. Rider responded with a couple baskets, pushing their lead back to double digits. But, a layup from Sims on an assist from freshman Lala Watts with a second on the clock had the Saints within 11 at halftime.
The second half would be all Rider, as the Broncs took off after halftime, putting up 25 total points to Siena's 11 in the third quarter to build a 62-37 lead. Siena would outscore the Broncs 17-15 in the fourth quarter, but Rider would take the win.
Siena outscored the Broncs 32-28 in the paint, and forced Rider into 16 turnovers. However, the Broncs put up 21 second chance points in the contest.
The Saints return to the floor on Saturday, March 2 for the final regular season game of the season. Siena will be taking on the Quinnipiac Bobcats, with a 2 p.m. tip-off at the Alumni Recreation Center on what will also be Senior Day.
