Finishing their fifth game in 10 days, the Siena Saints women's basketball team took to the floor against the Manhattan Jaspers. Despite holding a lead through the first three quarters, Siena struggled to score the basketball in the fourth and fell to the Jaspers by a final score 52-48 at Draddy Gymnasium. It would be the first loss of the year for the Saints when they have been leading at the half.
The Saints (9-13, 5-6) were led by a trio of nine point performances by redshirt senior
Aaliyah Jones, and juniors
Maddie Sims and
Sabrina Piper. Sims would add a team-high eight rebounds, while Piper and Jones each toss out four assists. Jones would also snag four steals, helping the Saints to 14 steals as a team in the ballgame. Redshirt senior
Joella Gibson would also have a solid game, scoring seven points and swiping a team-high five steals.
The Jaspers (6-14, 4-5) were led by a 16 point performance from Courtney Warley, who fell a rebound shy of a double-double with nine rebounds. She also snagged a team-high six steals in the ballgame. D'Yona Davis and Lynette Taitt each scored in double-figures as well, with Davis hitting 12 and Taitt putting up 11.
The Green and Gold came out flying on both sides of the court, as they hit their first two shots as well as forced a trio of turnovers in Manhattan's first three possessions. In the first quarter alone, the Saints would be all over on defense, collecting eight Manhattan turnovers. However, the Jaspers woke up and briefly overtook the Saints in the quarter. It would be three-pointers from Piper and Gibson to take a 16-13 lead into the second.
Siena would slowly build a lead in the second quarter, as they used a healthy 13-5 run to expand to a 29-18 lead at the 5:43 mark in the game. That would be the Saints biggest lead of the day, as Sims went on a run of consecutive buckets. After a Sims made free throw with 1:35 remaining in the first half, neither team would score up through the buzzer as the Saints held that lead, 30-22.
Throughout the third quarter, the Saints maintained their lead despite Manhattan hitting some shots. Both teams squared away with 13 points in the quarter, as it was still an eight point Siena advantage. However, the Saints couldn't find their scoring ways in the fourth, while Manhattan took advantage of some Siena turnovers and quickly took a lead. The Jaspers would hold the Green and Gold to just five points in the final quarter, scoring 17 points and taking the 52-48 victory.
The Saints finally pick up a few days off and will return to the floor on Thursday, Feb. 7 when they head to New Rochelle to take on the Iona Gaels. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
