Siena Softball took the field for the first time in 15 days Sunday, competing in a pair of contests at the Nor'Eastern Classic in West Hartford, Connecticut. The Saints dropped a 5-1 decision to 2018 NCAA Tournament Participant Boston University before falling, 7-5, to host Hartford.
Following the cancellation of a scheduled doubleheader at Central Connecticut State to begin the weekend tournament, Siena (3-11), headed to the UH Softball Field to take on the Terries, with the game starting scoreless through three innings. The Terriers would score three times with the long ball in the middle innings, using a two-run shot in the fourth and solo home runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull out to a 4-0 lead. After another BU insurance run scored on a sacrifice fly in the sixth, the Saints finally broke onto the scoreboard with a big fly of their own, with sophomore
Isabelle DeChiaro sending a ball over the center field fence for her second of the season.
DeChiaro and freshman
Natalie Marchese each registered hits for the Green and Gold in game one, while junior
Brooke Hughes (0-3) got the nod inside the circle, taking the loss in five innings of action with a pair of strikeouts. Freshman
Sarah Dowalo struck out two batters as well thereafter, putting in two relief innings.
Siena took the field to face the host Hawks of Hartford shortly after, with the home team taking an early 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. After three scoreless innings, the Saints responded to briefly tie the game at one, with freshman
Yamila Evans advancing to second base on an error that allowed senior
Lauren Sabihon to cross the plate. Hartford would respond swiftly the following inning, however, putting together a six-run frame in the bottom of the fifth thanks to three RBI singles, a pair of fielding errors and an RBI fielder's choice.
Trailing 7-1 entering the top of the sixth, Siena began what would be a legitimate comeback attempt, with DeChiaro reaching on an error that led to senior
Madysen Cossack crossing the plate to make it a 7-2 ballgame. Cossack would come home once more the following innings, as she fired a ball over the center field fence with two outs in the top of the seventh for a three-run homer, her first big fly of the 2019 season. The comeback was quickly shutdown thereafter, with the following batter grounding out to end the game.
Evans stepped in the circle to start game two, allowing just one run on two hits and walking one in three innings. Hughes (0-4) returned to pitch thereafter, taking the loss in an inning of work. Dowalo once again finished the contest for the Saints, striking out a batter in two innings of work.
Following the Sunday doubleheader, Siena will look to end a seven-game losing skid on Wednesday, March 27. The Saints will welcome Army West Point to Loudonville for their hope-opening doubleheader, with game one action beginning at 2 PM. Both games will be streamed live on Siena All-Access.
