Siena Women's Golf senior Sara Riso and sophomore Abigail Chai-Onn each shot +5, 77 to finish tied for eighth place individually in round one of the 2019 MAAC Championships in Lake Buena Vista, Florida Thursday. Overall, the Saints lead Hartford by one stroke after the first of three days of competition at Disney's Magnolia Golf Course, sitting fourth our of nine participants.
Looking to replicate an All-MAAC finish from last season, Riso birdied holes 10 and 11, while Chai Onn joined her by going under on the former. The pair sit tied with golfers from the Hawks and tournament leader UAlbany after one go-around on the par-72, 5948-yard course.
Playing from the No. 2 spot, sophomore Grace Cuttone shot +11, 83 to land in a knot for 24th place after one round of play. Rounding out the squad's five-women competition team was freshman Lena Kaufman (+15, 87) and senior Ashley Nguyen (+16, 88), who finished in ties for 33rd and 35th, respectively.
Competing at the event for the 21st year in program history, the 13-time champion Saints are looking to best a fifth-place finish from last season, while the defending title-holder Great Danes have a six-stroke lead on the field.
Siena will take the course for day two of the 54-hole tournament beginning at 7:00 AM on Friday, April 19. The Saints will begin from hole one, with the first team member going at 7:45 AM.
