For the sixth time in program history, the Siena Saints hit 13 three-pointers in a single game as they came back from a once 12-point deficit to defeat the Canisius Golden Griffins by a final score of 68-63 on Saturday afternoon for their first road win of the season. After allowing Canisius to go 14-for-23 in the first half for 40 points, the Saints locked down and held them to only nine field goals in the second half, outscoring the Golden Griffins 37-23.
The last time the Saints knocked down 13 three-pointers in a game came back on Nov. 14, 2008 when they lit up the ARC for 13 against the Syracuse Orange.
Sophomores
Amari Anthony and
Margo Peterson each collected new career-high's in points, each scoring a team-high 18 points with 6 rebounds. Peterson would be a catalyst on offense, going 5-for-9 from long distance. Anthony would go 7-for-11 from the floor, including a pair of three pointers. Freshman
Ashley Williamson was clutch from long range as well, putting up 14 points with four three-pointers. Freshman
Julia Hauer pitched in with five assists.
For Canisius, Danielle Sanderlin scored a team-high 20 points with 10 rebounds and four assists for a double-double. D'Jai Patterson-Ricks added 16 points, and A.J. Timbers scored 15 points which included a trio of three-pointers.
In the first half, the Saints struggled on the defensive end despite getting five Canisius turnovers in the first five minutes of play. The Golden Griffins would score at a 66.7 percent clip in the first quarter, followed by a 57.1 percent clip in the second quarter. Despite the high-percentage offense for the Golden Griffins, the Saints held within reach. However, with the game tied 28-28 with 4:45 to play in the second, Canisius put up a 10-0 run and were able to go up 12 as the end of the half approached. Williamson would hit a three at the halftime buzzer, as the Saints went into the locker room down 40-31.
At the start of the second half, Anthony would get heated up and score seven points in the first five minutes of the quarter as the Saints chipped away. Over the final 4:42 of the third quarter, Siena would go on an 9-2 run, capped by an Anthony three-pointer to pull within two points, 49-47.
The Golden Griffins scored a quick five points to begin the fourth quarter, going up 54-47 creating some cushion. But the Saints kept pushing and would ultimately tie the game with 4:15 to play as Williamson hit a jumper to put the score at 55-55. Despite Canisius snagging a layup to briefly go back on top for a moment, junior
Rayshel Brown and Williamson went back-to-back from behind the arc to give Siena the lead. Over the final 3:48 of the game, the Saints would outscore the Golden Griffins 13-6 to seal the win, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor including 2-for-2 from three-point range.
The Green and Gold return to the floor on Thursday, Jan. 16 as they return to the Alumni Recreation Center to take on the Manhattan Jaspers. It will be Kids Day at the ARC, with tip-off coming at 11 a.m.
