The Siena Saints women's basketball team continued their defensive prowess of late on Thursday night, as they defeated the Niagara Purple Eagles by a final score of 59-54 in the Alumni Recreation Center. The Saints held Niagara to 32.3 percent shooting and turned them over 24 times. Junior DeAnna Winston would hit a three-point shot with 24 seconds to play to give Siena a five-point cushion down the stretch.

Leading the Saints for the second straight game would be sophomore Lala Watts, as she corralled her first collegiate double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while also adding five blocks. Her double-double would be the second by a Saint this year, with Julia Hauer getting one back on Nov. 12 at Harvard. Sophomores Amari Anthony and Margo Peterson led the offense with 16 and 15 points, as Anthony went a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line and Peterson connected on 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Out of the Green and Gold's five wins, four of them have come at home in the friendly confines of the ARC. The lone road win was at Canisius earlier this season.

Watts now stands three blocks away from cracking into the single-season Top 10 for blocks, as she sits at 35 total blocks for the season. That total is best for the top spot in the MAAC, as she averages a league-best 1.9 blocks per game.

In the series history, Siena and Canisius will be squaring off for the 78th time on Saturday night, with the Saints holding a 52-25 advantage all-time. Head Coach Ali Jaques stands 11 wins away from passing Joe Hogan on Siena's all-time coaching wins list.

The last time these two teams met was back on Jan. 11. For the sixth time in program history, the Siena Saints hit 13 three-pointers in a single game as they came back from a once 12-point deficit to defeat Canisius by a final score of 68-63. After allowing Canisius to go 14-for-23 in the first half for 40 points, the Saints locked down and held them to only nine field goals in the second half, outscoring the Golden Griffins 37-23 over the last two frames. Sophomores Amari Anthony and Margo Peterson each collected new career-high's in points, each scoring a team-high 18 points with 6 rebounds.
