LOUDONVILLE, NY – Sophomore
Amari Anthony turned up the heat on the hardwood Saturday afternoon, as she found her groove to the tune of a new career-high 22 points as the Siena Saints snagged victory the Canisius Golden Griffins a 72-43 in commanding fashion with former Siena women's basketball players in attendance for Alumni Day.
The win would make it three straight victories for the Saints and would be their largest margin of victory since a 70-36 victory over Saint Peter's on Feb. 25, 2018.
Anthony would collect her 22 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the floor that included five three pointers. Senior
Sabrina Piper was the other Saint in double-figures with 18 points, adding a team-high four assists, a steal, and a block. Sophomore Lala Watts continued her strong defensive play with another four blocks, also adding nine points on 4-for-5 shooting.
Rayshel Brown snagged a team-high six rebounds and dished out three assists. As a team, the Saints would tally up seven blocks.
Canisius was led by a 16 points game from Danielle Sanderlin, as she would be the only Golden Griffin in double-figures adding a perfect 5-for-5 on free throws and falling a rebound shy of a double-double with nine on the game. D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks and Erika Jospeh each scored six points as the second highest totals on the roster.
The offense came early and often for the Green and Gold as they grabbed an early 21-4 lead in the first quarter on 57.1 percent shooting. On the flip side, the Saints held the Golden Griffins to just one field goal and a pair of free throws in the first 10 minutes. The Saints continued the pressure in the second, as the defense held down the fort while the offense took off.
From midway through the first quarter to the halfway point of the second quarter, the Saints went on a 23-3 run over that 9:49 capped by a layup from Anthony that gave Siena a 34-7 lead. The score would stand 39-13 at the half, as Siena would hold their largest lead of the season and would also set a new season-best 13 points given up in a single half.
The Saints continued their run in the third and fourth quarters, as Anthony and Piper led the offensive charge down the stretch. Siena would dominate in the paint, scoring 40 points inside the key, and would also convert in transition with 26 points off turnovers and 16 on the fast break as they kept their foot on the gas through the final horn.
The Saints return to action on Thursday, Feb. 6 when they return to the road to take on the Manhattan Jaspers. Tip-off for the game will be 11 a.m., Siena's final early start of the season.
