Monmouth clinched the MAAC Regular Season Championship with a 1-0 win over Siena Women's Soccer on the Jersey Shore.
Brooke Boermeester made seven saves for the Saints in a rematch of last spring's MAAC Championship Match in which Siena prevailed in PK's following a scoreless tie to secure the program's third title.
Brianna Russo accounted for the lone goal in the 38
th minute for Monmouth (11-4-1, 7-1-1), which secured its eighth regular season crown in nine tries since joining the MAAC in 2013. Siena (8-8-1, 6-3) is the only other program to win a MAAC Regular Season Title during that time, capturing the crown last spring.
The Hawks held a 14-6 shot advantage and attempted all eight corners in a heavyweight battle featuring the two programs which have accounted for the past six MAAC Championships, and who also entered the penultimate regular season match 1-2 in the standings.
The Saints had their best chances early, coming in the fourth minute courtesy of
Carrie Krohn. The striker accounted for both of Siena's shots on target for the afternoon on one play, breaking free on a long service. The keeper came out far off her line to stop a shot in tight on the initial play and then, as she retreated, turned aside a second look.
The Saints attempted the first three shots of the match, only to see Monmouth respond with the next 12 and cash in late in the first half. With 7:53 remaining in the stanza, a service was pinballed in tight and knocked just across the goal line by Russo for the decisive score.
With Siena suffering just its second loss in its past seven matches, the Saints now sit in a three-way tie for second-place in the MAAC Standings with both Niagara and Quinnipiac heading into the final day of regular season action Wednesday. Siena will look to bounce back, while also aiming to secure a MAAC Quarterfinal home match, when they travel to Saint Peter's for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
