LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Siena Volleyball saw their three-match win streak come to an end on Sunday as the Green and Gold were defeated by the Rider Broncs by a final score of 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 23-25, 14-25).
Â
"That was a heck of a match with momentum swings going both ways, sometimes even in the same rally," said head coach
Vilis Ozols. "I'm proud of how our team is able to battle with anybody in the conference. I know we will keep growing and developing and the future is bright for this group."
Â
Freshman
Sara Wagner scored 13 kills, going into double-digits for the second consecutive match. Graduate student
Emily Wunder added 11 kills, and sophomore
Meghan Johnsson tossed out 23 assists in the offense. Freshman
Claire Isaksen also added 20 asists, while defensively junior
Gracie Halley had 13 digs.
Â
Rider's Morgan Romano had another big match with a 26-kill effort, adding six digs. Jillian Chan also had 16 kills, while Anilee Sher tossed out 47 assists with 14 digs for a double-double. Caprice Clarke had a hand in six blocks, including two solo blocks.
Â
It would be a battle from the get-go as Rider held an early lead, but the Saints hung around until they grabbed an 11-10 lead. A few rallies later, the Saints would score four in a row to pull away for a 16-12 lead. The Saints were able to maintain the lead the rest of the way, as Wunder and freshman
Olga Sawinska would each get kills at the end to give Siena the 1-0 lead.
Â
In the second, both sides would battle throughout the set. A kill from Wunder late would tie things up at 21-21, before Rider looked to Romano to shut the door. She would score three straight kills to bring the Broncs to set point at 24-21, and would ultimately score the clinching point after a kill from Wagner extended the set. That would bring things even at 1-1.
Â
Siena would start the third set slow, as Romano stayed hot for the Broncs as Rider opened a 7-3 lead. However, Siena would go on an 8-0 run to then take an 11-7 lead. The Saints would maintain a lead, pulling out to a 19-16 lead late in the set. From that point, momentum would swing to Rider as the Broncs scored seven points in a row to bring things to 23-19. Despite a late push from the Saints pulling within one at 24-23, Chan would close things out for a 25-23 win to go up 2-1. Rider then closed the door in the fourth, taking a 25-14 win to clinch the match.
Â
The Saints return to action on Saturday, Nov. 6 when the Green and Gold head to Fairfield to take on the Stags at 1 p.m.
