LOUDONVILLE, NY – A pair of scoring spurts in each half of the contest propelled Siena Men's Soccer (6-4-2, 2-1-1), to a 2-2 draw with MAAC foe Fairfield (2-6-1, 1-2-1) Saturday at Hickey Field. The Saints earned a point in conference play to remain near the top of the MAAC standings after four matches.
Competing in their second straight home match after gaining a 1-0 overtime win over Saint Peter's on Wednesday, the Green and Gold saw their scoring begin by way of sophomore striker
Bilal Hersi, who netted his team-leading fourth goal of the year in the 22
nd minute off passes from freshmen
Erik Reis and
Jesper Schone Vogtengen. It took only a minute and 31 seconds for Fairfield to respond, with Rejnhold Sorenson knotting the match at one off a former kick from Cormac Pike.
Fairfield briefly held the lead in the second half, when Jonathan Filipe netted his fifth goal of the season in the 70
th minute. Siena sophomore
Cole Hellert would tie the game back up in the 75
th minute with his first collegiate score, a right-side strike in the box that came after help from
Antonio Linge and
Birgir Thorsteinsson. The Saints attempted four of the five shots logged over the two overtime periods, but neither team could find the back of the net en-route to the series' first tie since 2017.
The Saints logged a season-high 17 shots in the tie, out-shooting the Stags, 17-9, and holding a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. Siena saw shots attempted from eight different players, with Hersi leading the way at four. Senior goalkeeper
Greg Monroe made one save on the day, putting his career total at 250.
Siena will now prepare to head back out on the road to continue MAAC play, first traveling west to face Niagara on Wednesday, October 13 at 4 PM.
