HAMDEN, CT – Quinnipiac scored the tying goal with just 6:47 remaining in regulation and then prevailed 5-3 in penalty kicks to end defending champion Siena Women's Soccer's run at a repeat in the MAAC Semifinals. The second-seeded Bobcats advance to the MAAC Championship Match after officially playing the fourth-seeded Saints to a 1-1 draw.
Quinnipiac (13-4-1) moves on to the MAAC Final for the second time (2016) since joining the conference in 2013. The Bobcats will meet top-seeded Monmouth in the MAAC Championship Match Sunday following the Hawks' 4-0 victory over No. 6 seed Fairfield.
Quinnipiac held a commanding 27-6 advantage in shots and a 7-4 margin in corners, but trailed deep into the match thanks to a 42
nd minute goal by
Emily McNelis and stellar goalkeeping from
Leslie Adams.
McNelis staked Siena (9-9-2) to a 1-0 lead with just 3:48 remaining in the opening half, burying a 25-yard blast inside the top right corner. The goal was the fourth of her career against the Bobcats, three of which have come in postseason play.
The Saints seemed destined for their third trip to the championship match in four years, but the Bobcats broke through with the equalizer off the foot of Rebecca Cooke in the 84
th minute.
Quinnipiac turned up the pressure late, out-shooting Siena 18-2 following the first half while attempting all six shots during the overtime periods, but Adams and the Saints held strong. Adams made three of her eight saves during extra time to give Siena a chance to get to penalties.
But the Bobcats were perfect in PK's, with Lauren Triglione converting the decisive attempt to send Quinnipiac to the championship match.
