LOUDONVILLE, NY – Seniors
Amari Anthony and
Margo Peterson each scored over 20 points as the Saints defeated the Dominican College (DII) Chargers by a final score of 99-81 in an exhibition at the UHY Center on Saturday afternoon.
Anthony led the way with 22 points and eight rebounds, going 6-for-9 from the floor and tossing in eight of nine from the free throw line. Peterson would shine from distance, going for 21 points on 4-for-6 shooting from behind the arc. Anthony also led the team in rebounds with eight, while Peterson finished just behind her with seven. Also scoring in double figures was sophomore
Ahniysha Jackson, who tossed in 19 points with a team-high eight assists.
Rayshel Brown also added 14 points and five rebouns. As a team, the Saints shot 51.6 percent from the field.
Dominican was led by a 15 point effort from Taylor Tomlinson, as she went 7-for-13 from the floor and added six rebounds. Khay'la Latimer also finished strong, going for 15 points and a team-high six assists. Jaid Harrell added nine rebounds and a pair of steals, as the Chargers forced 26 Siena turnovers. However, the Saints would force 27 Dominican turnovers.
Siena started strong, making all six of their first shots from the field. Their largest lead early would be eight points, as they pushed to a 10-2 start. Despite the hot shooting early, Dominican took advantage of early turnovers and pushed the Saints out of a lead after a layup from Harrell to take a 24-23 lead. After a free throw by Tomlinson that gave Dominican a 25-23 lead, Brown would end the first quarter with a breakaway layup off a steal for a 25-all tie.
In the second, the Saints would get out to a nine point lead as they found their groove hitting five three pointers in the frame. With 5:10 remaining before the half, Siena would receive back-to-back-to-back threes, starting with freshman
Emina Selimovic, followed by Jackson and Anthony to stretch out to a nine point lead, 43-34. That would give the Saints some cushion through the frame, as freshman
Valencia Fontenelle-Posson would hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the half. That late bucket would give the Saints a 50-44 lead into the break.
The Saints pulled out to a double-digit lead in the third, finishing the frame holding Dominican to their least amount of points on the game (17) and an eight point lead, 69-61. The Green and Gold would finish things off in the fourth, extending their largest lead of the day out to 20 points with 29 seconds remaining, as Anthony hit a long jumper just inside the three point arc to seal the day offensively.
Points off turnovers would be a main point for the Saints, as they converted 37 points off turnovers on the game, getting at least 11 points per frame in three of the four quarters. Dominican did finish with more points in the paint, scoring 44 to Siena's 38 from inside.
The Saints open their regular season this Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 5:30 p.m. on the road in Vestal.
