Men’s Soccer Edged in MAAC Quarterfinals

Siena Upset by Rider at Hickey Field Sunday

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Hosting a postseason match for just the second time in program history, a tightly-contested affair ended in defeat for Siena Men's Soccer (9-7-3). The number four seeded Saints fell at the hands of the number five seed Rider Broncs (9-7-2), 1-0, at Hickey Field in the 2021 MAAC Men's Soccer Quarterfinals Sunday afternoon.

Facing each other for the second time in eight days following a 2-0 Siena win in New Jersey on October 30, it was the visitors who got on the board early and never looked back, with Francis Gomez Olanso finishing a cross in the fifth minute from the left side of the box to give the extremely physical match its final result. The contest featured 32 combined fouls and six cards, with Rider holding a 14-9 shots advantage and each squad taking four corner kicks.

Siena featured eight different players register a shot, with freshman Jacob Sandun Arachchige-Jensen's two attempts leading the way. Senior goalkeeper Greg Monroe made five saves in the effort, while Rider's Pablo Gatinois made four saves in the Broncs' second shutout of the season.

Rider advances and will host a match in the MAAC Tournament Semifinals, while Siena's Fall 2021 season ends with the most wins in a season since 2014 and the program's second straight postseason appearance under second year head coach Graciano Brito. The Saints saw 17 different players register a point during the year, marking the most since the 2002 campaign.

The Fall 2021 Men's Soccer All-Academic Team and Postseason Awards will be announced on Monday, November 8.
