The Siena Volleyball team closed out their weekend on the road on Sunday, as the Green and Gold fell to the Quinnipiac Bobcats in Hamden by a 3-1 (19-25, 21-25, 25-22, 16-25) final score.
"We did some nice things offensively today," said head coach
Vilis Ozols. "I thought Quinnipiac's defensive intensity was the difference."
Siena was led by a pair of 11 kill efforts from graduate student
Emily Wunder and senior
Abby Huffman. Senior
Maddy Dunigan and freshman
Sara Wagner each also had 10 kills apiece while sophomore
Greta Stjade and freshman
Olga Sawinska each had seven kills. Defensively, junior
Gracie Halley had 17 digs.
Quinnipiac was led by Maggie Baker, who led all players with 14 kills. Nicole Legg added 12 kills and four blocks, while Daniela Balsano had 19 digs.
It would be all Bobcats in the first set, as Quinnipiac was able to score in bunches which led to a 21-13 lead. Siena would fight back to a 24-19 score, but Legg would cap the set with a kill for the Bobcats for the 1-0 lead. In the second, the Saints jumped out to a 14-12 lead before the Bobcats used an 8-1 run to turn it into a 20-15 lead. Quinnipiac would close out the set 25-21 despite a late push from the Saints.
In the third, the Saints would turn the tables as it was Quinnipiac who jumped out to a lead, holding on late with a 19-16 score. A 5-0 run by Siena would turn that into a 21-19 lead for the Green and Gold. Maintaining the lead with a score 23-22, Wunder would smack a kill followed by a Quinnipiac attack error would give the Saints a 25-22 victory to make the match 2-1. However, the Bobcats closed the door in the fourth as a huge 7-0 run pushed them to a 25-16 win for the victory.
The Saints return to action on Saturday, Nov. 13 when they host Marist in their regular season finale at 1 p.m. Siena will also honor their four members of their senior class prior to the start of the match.
