LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Siena Women's Basketball team fell just short of starting the month of December with a win, as the Saints fell to the Colgate Raiders by a final score of 56-54. Despite falling to 0-7, Siena now has fell by no more than 10 points in each game, with three losses this season by a margin of four points or less.
Leading the offense was an efficient scoring night from senior
Margo Peterson, who scored a team-high 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field and 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Peterson also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Fifth-year
Rayshel Brown added 12 points and five rebounds, and senior
Amari Anthony was the other Siena player in double-figures with 11 points.
Colgate was led by Tiasia McMillan, who scored a team-high 13 points and had five rebounds. Taylor Golembiewski added nine points, and Morgan Frank scored six points but added 11 rebounds to her stat line.
The Saints would get out to the fast lead, as a pair of threes from Brown and Peterson in the first minutes of the game helped push the Green and Gold to a 12-5 lead midway through the quarter. By the end of the first, Siena maintained an 18-13 lead thanks to a last second layup from freshman
Imani Harris.
The lead for the Saints would grow to as much as 10 with 6:32 to play after Brown finished the back end of a three-point play. With Siena holding an eight point lead with 2:06 on the clock, Colgate finished the half on a 9-0 run to take a 32-31 lead into the locker room.
Colgate then turned the tables in the third, extending the run by a basket to start the second and holding a seven point lead, 49-42, going into the fourth. The Saints would hold Colgate to just seven points in the final quarter, pulling within a point and holding Colgate without a point for a stretch of 2:46 that went into the final minute of play. Forcing Colgate to the free throw line, Siena would trail by two with 13 seconds to play and possession of the ball after Colgate missed the back end of the free throws. The Saints would get a look after a timeout, but a jumper off the mark would end the game.
Siena out-rebounded Colgate by a 39-33 margin, as the Saints out-rebounded the Raiders 22-17 in the second half. The Saints also won the battle in the paint, scoring 32 to Colgate's 30 from inside.
The Saints will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. when they head across town to take on the UAlbany Great Danes at SEFCU Arena.
