Women’s Hoops Downed at Quinnipiac

Hot Start Fizzles As Saints Fall to Bobcats

After a hot start that saw the Saints shoot just north of 60 percent in the first half, the Siena Saints struggled to score in the fourth quarter as they fell to the Quinnipiac Bobcats by a final score of 84-63.

Despite the cold fourth quarter that saw the Saints shoot just 13.3 percent from the floor (2-for-15), they shot 44.8 percent on the game, which was their highest total since almost exactly a year ago when they shot 46.2 percent in a loss to Marist on Feb. 16, 2020.

Siena was led by a 22 point afternoon from graduate student Isis Young. Backing her up on offense would be junior Margo Peterson, who added 13 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three blocks off the bench. Senior Rayshel Brown scored eight points and snatched five steals, which would be the most steals in a game from a Saint since Aaliyah Jones had six against Iona in the 2019 MAAC Tournament.

The Bobcats were led by a 21 point, 10 rebound, four block game from Mikayla Morris, as she went 10-for-19 from the floor. Makenzie DeWees chipped in a double-double as well, going for 13 points and 11 rebounds. Reigning MAAC Player of the Week Rose Caverly scored 10 points while dishing out nine assists.

The Saints came out firing in the first quarter, attacking the hoop for baskets early on as Siena had five different scorers all in the frame. Siena would lead by as many as six points, as they led 16-10. Despite the scoring, Quinnipiac scored some late buckets as the Bobcats and Saints played to an even 18-18 score after 10 minutes. The Green and Gold outrebounded the Bobcats 11-4 in the first quarter as well.

Siena continued to pound the paint in the second quarter, as they would double-up the Bobcats in the paint 28-16 by halftime. With seven seconds to play and down 35-34, junior Amari Anthony took the ball coast-to-coast and scooped a layup at the buzzer that dropped as the Saints would lead by one going into the locker room. The bucket from Anthony would cap a 9-1 run to end the half for the Saints.

In the third quarter, the Saints would grab a four point lead by the midway point after a steal and fast break finish from Brown with 4:54 to play. But the Bobcats would bounce back quickly, as Quinnipiac used a 9-0 run to open up an eight point lead heading into the final frame, leading 62-54. That momentum carried into the fourth, as they led through the final buzzer to take the 84-63 win.

The Saints will return to action this Saturday, as the Green and Gold will head to Jersey City to take on the Saint Peter's Peacocks. Game times for both Saturday and Sunday are still to be determined.
