The Siena Saints closed their weekend with the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Saturday evening at the John J. Moore Athletic Center on the campus of New Jersey City University. After a hot start, the Green and Gold would fall by a final score of 62-54.
Siena was led by a 10-point showing from junior
Amari Anthony. Senior
Marilena Gerostergiou provided the muscle in the paint with 11 rebounds, and junior
Haley Blasetti tossed out four assists. The Saints shot 45.8 percent from the field in the first half, before falling to a 23.1 percent clip in the second half.
Freshman Ajia James went for 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead Saint Peter's. After a strong showing on Friday, redshirt senior Taiah Thornton scored 14 points and dished 10 asssits on Saturday as she her and James were two of four Peacocks that scored in double-figures. Kendrea Williams and Tyara McQueen were the other two, finishing with 12 and 10, respectively.
The Saints came out strong, as they would open up a 10-point lead by the 5:48 mark in the first quarter. That would give the Green and Gold a cushion to play with into the first media timeout. Through the end of the first quarter and into the start of the second, the Peacocks would use a 14-0 run over a 6:13 span to take a 23-18 lead. However, it would the Saints who got the final say, as a 12-5 run to end the quarter gave Siena a 30-28 lead going into the locker room at the half.
In the second half, the Peacocks would make it difficult for the Saints on the offensive end in the third quarter. The Saints would score just seven points in the third, which led Saint Peter's to grabbing a 12 point lead, 49-37 through three quarters. Despite a late push by Siena after being down by as many as 16 points, their 13-5 run to end the game would pull them within eight points through the final buzzer.
The Saints will return to action this Thursday and Friday, Mar. 4 and 5 as they play host to the Niagara Purple Eagles. Tip-off from the UHY Center on both days will be at 1 PM.
