With just six players available to play at Monmouth Wednesday night, the Siena Women's Basketball team fell just short after being down by as many as 15 points in the game by a final score of 61-60. The Saints had the final shot of the game with a chance to win after giving up a layup with two seconds to play. Graduate student
Isis Young scored 28 points, a season-high for her.
Â
Young hit six three's en route to her season-high 28 point, which is also a career-high as well. Junior
Margo Peterson finished with a 12 point effort, corralling six rebounds.
Rayshel Brown was the other player in double-figures, finishing with 10 points.
Ashley Williamson finished with six points on two big three pointers, Sevval Istanbullouglu had four points, and freshman
Chantell Gonzalez racked up a team-high seven rebounds to round out the Saints lineup.
Â
Monmouth was led by a 16 point showing from freshman Belle Kranbuhl, who completed a double-double with 12 rebounds as well. Jania Hall added 13 for the Hawks, while Saule Kaupyte grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.
Â
Siena struggled in the first half in terms of rebounding, leading to many offensive chances for Monmouth. The Hawks were able to spin two separate runs of 12-0 and 8-0 in the first half to aid them to a 35-22 lead after two frames. The Saints were outrebounded by a 25-14 margin.
Â
However, the Saints picked up both the rebounding and scoring in the second half. With 5:42 to play in the third, Young hit one of her three pointers to cut the lead to 10 points. That began a 14-2 run for the Saints that cut the lead to just one point with 14 seconds to go thanks to a pair of free throws by Brown. However, Monmouth's Gabrielle Wener hit a three pointer with two seconds to play in the quarter to give them a four point lead to enter the final frame.
Â
The Saints wouldn't go away, and thanks to Williamson with 6:38 to go in the fourth, she hit a three pointer to give the Saints their first lead since the first quarter at 47-46. That began the trading of jabs down the stretch, as the lead would change 14 times including ties. Peterson would hit a layup with 1:13 to play, which gave Siena a 60-59 lead. The Saints would get a turnover courtesy of a steal created by Williamson, but would miss the dagger at the other end. With time to spare, Monmouth made the best of their opportunity with a layup from Jennifer Louro with two seconds to play. After a timeout, the inbound pass would come into Young as her shot to win would rim out as time expired.
Â
One of the keys for the Saints came at the free throw line, hitting 13 of 14 attempts on the game, and scoring 18 points off of turnovers to Monmouth's six. Monmouth finished with 49 rebounds to Siena's 30, while they also beat the Saints in the paint 36-14.
Â
The Saints will return to action this Saturday, as the Green and Gold will face the Manhattan Jaspers for a weekend series. Saturday's game will tip at 12 PM, and will be nationally broadcast on ESPNU.
