Siena Softball (15-11) salvaged a game to end a four-game weekend series at MAAC foe Manhattan (16-10) Saturday afternoon. The Saints dropped a 3-1 decision before battling back for a 4-0 shutout victory in game two at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, New York.
Game 1: Manhattan 3, Siena 1
Looking to rebound after dropping a pair of contests to begin the weekend affair, The Saints fell down, 2-0, early in the ballgame, with Manhattan using a stolen bag at home on an RBI single to take the lead. The Saints got just two batters on-base prior to the seventh inning offensively, while an RBI ground out in the bottom of the third extended the lead for the home team.
Manhattan worked behind a gem in the circle from Nicole Williams (7-1), who allowed just an earned run on three hits while walking three and striking out five during the complete game win. Siena's
Nicole Patille (2-2) took the complete game loss, allowing a pair of earned runs on as many hits while walking and striking out four apiece. Siena got a run back in the off an RBI double from junior
Yamila Evans that plated senior
Isabelle DeChiaro, but could not come back any further.
Game 2: Siena 4, Manhattan 0
The Saints ended a streak of three straight losses on the weekend by putting forth their third shutout of the season in game four to keep pace with the top of the MAAC standings. Working alongside a complete game victory from graduate pitcher
Maddie McMahon in the circle, Siena played the home team scoreless into the fifth inning before exploding for a four-run frame. The Saints loaded up the bases for DeChiaro to double to right field, with sophomore
Sophia Caputo, sophomore
Antonia Alba, and freshman
Isabella Pardo able to score as a result. Evans sent DeChiaro across home on the next at-bat with a single up the middle.
The Saints out-hit Manhattan 10-3 on the game, with Evans and Alba each logging a three-hit affair and DeChiaro hitting safely twice. McMahon (6-3) recorded six strikeouts while walking a pair of batters, with Manhattan's Jessie Rising (5-4) taking the loss in four and one-third innings in the circle.
Siena will next return home for one final doubleheader affair to kick off the final week of regular season play. The Saints will host I-87 rival Marist at Siena Softball Field on Wednesday, April 28, with games scheduled for 2 PM & 4 PM.
