Saints Sweep Manhattan

Volleyball Wins Two in a Row, Sweep MAAC Weekend

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Senior Maddy Dunigan continued her solid weekend, as the Siena Volleyball team defeated the Manhattan Jaspers in straight sets, 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-15) at the UHY Center on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Saints have now won two matches in a row.

"The team put forth a solid effort today," said head coach Vilis Ozols. "Gracie had an outstanding match defensively, and Maddy continued her hot weekend offensively. We also saw production from all of our offensive players and defensive players and truly won as a team today."

Dunigan finished with 12 kills and five blocks, setting the tone for the Saints on the day. Junior Gracie Halley paced the defensive effort putting up a team-leading 18 digs. Graduate student Emily Wunder added eight kills, and freshman Grace Wilhelm had a breakout performance with 11 digs and a team-high four aces. As a team, the Saints collected a season-high 11 aces on the match.

Manhattan saw Kelly Markowski and Lizzi Brown each notch five kills apiece. Camryn Paulson tossed out 10 assists, and Ashley Chan had the standout defensive effort with a match-high 20 digs.

It was all Siena early, as the Saints started out the match with six straight points, three of which were aces from sophomore Meghan Johnsson. Siena would get to a 10-2 lead with another small 4-0 run after the Jaspers scored a pair of points to break up the 6-0 score. The Saints kept the line moving through the set, ending the set on a 7-1 run, capped by back-to-back kills from Abby Huffman to go up 1-0.

The Green and Gold would score in bunches in the second set, as they jumped out to a large lead once again. With the score 21-12, Manhattan clawed back with some points on Siena errors. With the score 24-16, a service error from Manhattan clinched the set to put Siena up 2-0.

The same would come in the third, as an early 7-0 run would open up an 8-2 lead for the Saints. Manhattan would come back to make it 9-6 in favor of Siena, but the Green and Gold went on another large run of 10-1 as the score then stood 19-7 Saints. Despite a small run by the Jaspers, the Saints closed the door as Olga Sawinska clinched the match with a kill to win the set 25-15.

The Saints return to action next weekend on Saturday, Oct. 2 when they head on the road to take on the Rider Broncs. Opening serve for that match is slated for 1 p.m.
