After fighting to their first win on Monday afternoon, the Siena Saints look to continue that success as they head to Poughkeepsie to take on the rival Marist Red Foxes at 7 p.m. Thursday night at McCann Arena.
Over the final 7:15 of the game Monday afternoon, the Saints (1-10, 1-2) held the Iona Gaels scoreless while scoring 14 unanswered points en route to a 56-51 victory. The win marks the first of the season, and head coach
Jim Jabir's first win at the helm of the Saints since March 10, 1990.
Tying a season-high in points was senior
Rayshel Brown, who scored six of her 19 points in the fourth quarter. Brown also added a new career-high in steals with six. Freshman
Imani Harris dished out a new career-high five assists, all coming in the first half. Sophomore
Margo Peterson added 12 points, with junior
Anja Knoflach scoring 10 as the three Saints in double-figures. Fifth-year
Selena Philoxy continued her strong efforts on the boards with 10 rebounds, making it back-to-back games with double-figure rebounds.
Siena and Marist meet for the 75th time in their history, with the Red Foxes holding a 42-32 advantage. Marist currently has a nine-game winning streak, with the last Saints win coming back on Jan. 18, 2018. In head coach
Jim Jabir's career, he is 3-1 all-time as a head coach – including a 2-1 mark at Siena. His last Siena win came on Dec. 12, 1988 in a 78-61 win in Poughkeepsie. His last overall win came while as head coach at Providence on Nov. 24, 2001 in an 81-70 win in Poughkeepsie.
The last time the two teams met ended the Saints 2020-21 season in the MAAC Quarterfinals at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Despite a halftime lead, the Green and Gold fell to the Red Foxes by a final score of 63-55 on Mar. 10, 2021.
Siena was led by a 13-point effort from junior
Margo Peterson, as she went 4-for-8 from the floor including a 3-for-6 mark from behind the arc. Graduate student
Isis Young added 11 points and four assists. It would mark the second straight season the Saints' season has ended in the quarterfinals.
Marist got a 20-point performance from Sarah Barcello, and a double-double from Willow Duffel. Duffel would sport a 14-point, 14 rebound stat line in addition to four assists. Trinasia Kennedy was also in double-figures for the Red Foxes with 10 points.
The Red Foxes (3-8, 1-2) are coming off a 72-45 loss on Saturday to Manhattan. Trinasia Kennedy paced the Red Foxes with 15 points, five rebounds and a steal. Zaria Shazer was the only other Red Fox in double-digits with 13 points and eight rebounds. Kendall Krick chipped in with five points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. For the game, Marist shot 18-65 (.277) from the field. Manhattan finished 29-for-68 from the field (.426).
Marist is coming off a season-high in rebounds, collecting 39 rebounds in their last matchup with Manhattan. Also, they are shooting .735 (25-34) from the free-throw line in its last three MAAC games. Marist has held their opponents to a combined .386 (252-653) from the field and .315 (85-270) from the three-point range. The Red Foxes are averaging 52.7 points per game this season.
