LOUDONVILLE, NY – No matter the record entering play, late-season conference battles towards the end of the year with postseason implications always prove to be intense. Wednesday afternoon's MAAC Quarterfinal rematch between Siena and Rider was par for the course, with the rivals battling to a 2-2 draw at Hickey Field.
The tie – which came for the second straight contest for the Saints – gave them their fifth of the season and secured a winning regular season record for the second straight year, marking the first time since the 1994 and 1995 seasons that such has occurred. Siena ended regular season home play with a 3-2-3 mark in Loudonville, which secured the program's third straight positive record at home under third year head coach Graciano Brito.
Seeking revenge from last year's 1-0 postseason loss to the Broncs (2-8-5, 1-3-4), the Saints (7-5-5, 3-2-4) struck early, with sophomore Zach Gardner heading in a pass in the box from redshirt-senior Antonio Linge and junior Bilal Hersi. Siena held a commanding 8-4 shots advantage in the first half, with graduate student goalkeeper Greg Monroe not needing to make a save in the first 45 minutes.
Despite the Saints holding offensive control, Rider equalized minutes later in the first half, with Lenny Cidolit netting a header of his own on the other side of the field in the 22nd minute. The Broncs battled tough through the better part of the match, and broke through in the 78th minute by way of Cidolit's first career multi-goal game.
In a scrappy affair which featured six combined yellow cards and seven Siena shots within the final five minutes, Siena secured a conference point by way of sophomore Jacob Sandun Arachchige-Jensen, who had failed to convert a penalty kick in the first half. The Svendborg, Denmark native used a saved shot off the rider keeper from Gardner to one-time a ball in the box for his second goal of the season in the 87th minute, with an ensuing flurry of Siena attempts falling short in the final minutes.
Monroe tallied two saves, while Rider's Guillaume Veinante recorded six, with the Saints holding a 17-9 shots advantage on the afternoon and attempting five of nine corner kick opportunities.
With just one regular season match remaining in the 2022 season, Siena currently holds 13 points and sits in sole possession of fourth place in the MAAC Standings. The Saints will have a bye this weekend before ending regular season competition at Fairfield on Wednesday, November 2 at 7 PM.
