The Saints drew out to an early lead by as many as six in the first set, but saw a lead disappear when the Red Foxes took a 12-11 lead. From that point, Marist ran with the set and took a 25-18 win to go up 1-0.
Siena had an answer the next two sets, as the offense and blocking both stepped up and continually challenged the Red Foxes. Hinkel led the charge in the second frame, as the Green and Gold flipped the score from the first set to win 25-18. Siena then turned an early deficit in the third set into a 25-20 win in set three to go up 2-1 in the match. In those two sets, Siena hit .250 and a match-high .345 in the third.
In the fourth, Siena continued to look strong as they pulled out to a 16-11 lead. Hinkel and Wagner continued to roll until Marist caught fire. With the score 16-11 in favor of the Saints, the Red Foxes hit a 7-0 run to take an 18-16 lead. Both sides jostled for the lead, as Marist came out with a 23-21 lead late in the set. The Saints then scored five of the next six points – including the match-clinching kill from Hinkel – to come back and shut the door on the Red Foxes with a 26-24 set win to take the match.
Marist finished the match with 28 total attack errors, while Siena continued their strong serving with seven service aces on the afternoon.
Siena returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. when they hit the fourth of a four-match roadtrip to face the Quinnipiac Bobcats.
