Women’s Basketball Stopped Short by Fairfield

Saints Late Run Cut Short in Rematch with First Place Stags

Siena Women's Basketball had their rematch with the first place Fairfield Stags on Saturday afternoon. After the Saints got the best of the Stags earlier this season, Fairfield won round two as they took a 64-58 victory at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Fairfield got a 21-point performance from Preseason MAAC Player of the Year Lou Lopez-Senechal, and snagged four rebounds. Both Callie Cavanaugh and Andrea Hernangomez scored 11 points apiece, while Rachel Hakes dished out 11 assists and snagged nine rebounds. The Stags outpaced the Saints in the paint 32-18.

Senior Margo Peterson scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed five rebounds. Fifth year Selena Philoxy added 11 points with seven rebounds, with graduate student DeAnna Winston tossed out seven assists.

After a back-and-forth first quarter where the Saints led by as many as five points, Fairfield took a lead in the second quarter by as much as seven points. But a late Siena rally brought them back within a single score before Fairfield made it five-point game at the half, 33-28.

Siena couldn't overtake the Stags at any point in the second half despite Peterson finding her groove on offense. By the fourth, Fairfield brought their lead by as many as 15 points before. However, the Saints held the Stags without a field goal over the final 4:18 of the game and was able to bring the lead down to six. But there wouldn't be enough time on the clock for the Saints to continue their run, as the Stags held on for the win.

The Saints return to action on Monday, Feb. 14 when they finish their second straight three games in five days stretch at Manhattan. Game time in Riverdale is set for 7 p.m.
