LOUDONVILLE, NY – Sophomore
Ahniysha Jackson scored her way into a career night, pouring in a new career-best 21 points on seven three pointers as the Siena Saints took down the Canisius Golden Griffins by a final score of 56-54 at the UHY Center Thursday night.
Jackson's seven three pointers are tied for the second-most in a single game in program history, and the first to do so since Aaliyah Jones made seven versus Marist on Feb. 1, 2019. Jackson's seven three pointers also is a new high for a single game in the MAAC this season.
Backing up Jackson's effort was fifth-year
Rayshel Brown, as she scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds – nine coming in the first half. It marks the second career double-double for Brown, as she sets a new career-high in rebounds.
Canisius was led by a 14-point night from sophomore Dani Haskell, as she knocked down a pair of threes and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Erica Joseph also finished in double-figures with 10 points, while Athena Lexa grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Siena dominated on the boards in the first half, outrebounding the Golden Griffins 25-16 and outpacing them in the paint 14-8. For both sides, offense was hard to come by in the first half, with both teams shooting under 36 percent for the first 20 minutes. Jackson would make three of her four first-half three-pointers in the second quarter, leading the Saints to a 27-23 lead at the halfway point.
Jackson would come through clutch down the stretch, going a perfect 3-for-3 from long range to give the Saints the lead, and extend out the lead in the final minutes. A jumper from Brown with a minute to play gave Siena extra cushion it would need, as Haskell nailed a three to bring things back to a one-point game.
Senior
Margo Peterson converted one of two free throws, bumping the Siena lead back to two at 56-54. A pair of Siena defensive holds would help seal the deal, as a last second attempt for Canisius would be stripped away by Brown just before the final buzzer.
The Saints return to action on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. when they face off against the Quinnipiac Bobcats in Hamden.
