BALTIMORE, MD – Siena Softball (5-9) kicked off an eight-game road trip during Spring Break with a doubleheader split at defending MEAC Champion and 2021 NCAA Tournament Participant Morgan State (11-9) at Lois T. Murray Field in Baltimore, Maryland Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Siena 4, Morgan State 1
Â
The Saints kicked off their Mid-Atlantic road trip by jetting out to a 3-0 lead during the opening frame of game one, with junior
Emma McLaughlin sending home classmate
Antonia Alba and sophomore
Isabella Pardo on an RBI double and junior
Jocelyn Ulrich scoring on a ground out. Senior
Ava Fitzmaurice retired the first 11 batters of the game defensively en-route to a complete game win before the Bears used a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to play their only run of the game. The final run for the Saints came by way of an RBI single from Ulrich, while Morgan State only got two runners on-base during the final three innings of the game.
Â
Pardo and McLaughlin each registered two-hit outings for the Green and Gold, while Fitzmaurice (3-3) tallied her third complete game of the year with five strikeouts and only one earned run allowed.
Â
Morgan State 7, Siena 3
Â
Siena carried momentum from its opening game victory into the nightcap to pull out to a 3-0 yet again, with Ulrich singling up the middle to score senior
Sabrina Vargas in the third, and Vargas and junior
Angelina Stile each plating runs with RBI hits in the fourth.
Â
Morgan State's offense would come alive in the home half of the fifth, however, and convert a crooked inning to change the course of the game. The Bears plated all seven of their runs off six hits and sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth, with two RBI singles, an RBI double, and an RBI triple sealing the deal for the home team.
Â
Vargas registered a two-hit game for Siena, while junior
Nicole Patille (1-1) suffered the loss in the circle, giving up three earned runs without registering an out. Junior
Allison Speshyock, struck out three and walked three in a four-inning, no-decision start, while freshman
Adriana Romano tallied four strikeouts in two relief innings. Morgan State's Sarah Tuzinski (1-0) picked up the win in one and two-third innings in the circle.
Â
Siena's non-conference road trip continues on Wednesday, March 23, as the Saints head south to battle Howard in Washington D.C. Doubleheader action is set to begin at 3 PM.
