Saints Fell in MAAC Play to St. Francis Brooklyn & VMI

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Water Polo (4-21, 1-11) dropped two more close matches in conference play to begin a three-match weekend down South. The Saints cropped a 20-14 decision against St. Francis Brooklyn before falling, 18-14, to weekend host Virginia Military Institute at the Clark King Pool in Lexington, Virginia.

St. Francis Brooklyn 20, Siena 14

The Terriers, who took a 14-10 victory over the Saints at home earlier this season, held a close 5-4 advantage at the end of the first quarter and a 10-9 lead at the half. After SFC pulled out to a 5-2 lead near the end of the opening quarter, the Saints tied the match at five with 7:42 left in the first half by way of a goal from senior Georgia Vargas and a pair from junior Sydney Jones.

The Terriers still only led by two goals after three quarters of play, but ended the match netting seven of the final ten goals to hold on to victory. Jones recorded a hat trick, while freshman Ashley Chand, junior Grace Boeve, Vargas, and senior Bianca Prinsloo each registered multi-goal games. Junior Anna Mossakowski made two saves in-net for the Saints.

VMI 18, Siena 14

Looking to avenge their loss to the Saints at the Siena Swim Center, the Keydets scored five of seven goals in the first quarter to begin the match and held an 11-5 halftime lead before Siena became competitive offensively in the second half. The Saints out-scored their opponents, 9-7 in the final 16 minutes of play, but it was not enough to overcome an early deficit, despite Siena netting four of the final six goals.

Vargas led the way offensively with four goals, while Boeve, freshman Emma Nosenchuck, Jones, and freshman Cece White each put forth a multi-goal effort. Mossakowski made two saves in-goal while sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Behr registered four.

Siena will conclude action in Virginia on Sunday, April 10 against #23 LIU at 1 PM.
