Siena Marches On in 2022 MAAC Softball Championship

#3 Saints Set Single-Season Wins Record in Win Over #2 Fairfield

When every day can be your last, the name of the game is survive and advance. Taking part in its second straight elimination game in the 2022 MAAC Softball Championship, Siena Softball (30-22) accomplished the mission and made history in the process. The number three seeded Saints defeated #2 Fairfield, 5-2, to remain as one of the final tour teams in the tournament at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, New York.

The win marked the team's 30th of the season, which sets the single-season wins record in the program's 47th year of play. Siena also became the second team in program history to win two postseason games, and will advance to day three of the tournament for the first time since 2015. The Saints will now face #5 Marist in their third straight elimination game on Friday, May 13 at 1:30 PM, with the winner advancing to face the loser of #1 Canisius and #6 Iona at 4 PM.

After falling to the Gaels to begin the day, the Stags got on the board first with an RBI single in the home half of the second. Working off the strength of a winning relief outing from junior left-hander Nicole Patille (11-7) the Saints tied the game at one in the fourth by way of an RBI double from junior Jocelyn Ulrich that plated sophomore Mikala Fletcher. The lead turned to the lower seed in the top of the fifth, with senior Sabrina Vargas singling to right field to plate pinch runner Kaitlyn Davis and make the score 2-1 in favor of the Saints.

The Stags responded with an RBI single up the middle in the home half of the fifth to knot the game at two. Despite temporarily losing the lead, the Saints stranded the bases loaded defensively in the second and the fifth inning, and a pair of Fairfield arms to set up a crooked inning in the sixth. En-route to a career day which featured her as part of the final three scoring plays, junior Shannon Bonewit put the Saints ahead with an RBI single and then came home to score on a wild pitch, giving the Green and Gold the lead for good. The Kingston, New York native would send another run in an RBI single the following inning to give the game its final score.

Following one strikeout in one and one-third innings from freshman Adriana Romano, Patille locked down for the following three and two-thirds innings, recording three strikeouts and allowing one earned run. Senior Ava Fitzmaurice earned her fourth save of the year by striking out a pair and allowing just a single hit in the game's final two hits. Siena held a 10-9 hits advantage, with Bonewit and Ulrich each recording three hits to lead the offense.

Siena will look to capture three wins in the MAAC Tournament for the first time ever on Friday.
