Emily Wunder left off where she did last season, as she led the Siena Saints with nine kills in a season opening loss to the Boston College Eagles by a final score of 3-0 (25-27, 25-22, 25-11) at the Bearcat Invitational hosted by Binghamton.
The Eagles topped the Saints in most offensive departments, as they had five players finish with seven or more kills – led by eight from Alayna Crabtree. Led by Wunder, Siena also received strong efforts from sophomores
Sara Wagner and
Olga Sawinska with seven and six kills, respectively.
The start of the first set brought a flurry of scoring, as Boston College held a small lead throughout the start of the set. A small 6-0 run midway through the first brought the Eagles lead to 16-8. Boston College finished off the first set 25-17, setting up a strong effort from Siena in the second set.
The Green and Gold battled to the end in set two, pulling within a pair of points late against the ACC foe – 23-21. After trading kills and the score 24-22, the Eagles got a kill from Julia Haggerty to clinch the 2-0 match lead. Boston College finished it off in the third with a one-sided 25-11 finish.
Siena hit a strong .357 in the first set of the match before falling off in the second and third sets. The Green and Gold finished with 15 total errors to the Eagles' eight. Siena also finished the match without a block.
The Saints return to action this tomorrow for a pair of matches, first taking on the University of Maryland Eastern Shore at 11 AM, concluded by facing host Binghamton at 7 PM to round out their weekend in Vestal.
