Men’s Soccer Drops Non-Conference Finale at Brown

Bears Used Second Half Comeback to Down Saints

PROVIDENCE, RI – A pair of second half goals from Siena Men's Soccer's final non-conference match of the 2022 season put them at 0-2 in the city of Providence, Rhode Island during the month of September. The Saints (4-3-1) squandered a halftime lead to drop a 2-1 decision to Brown (4-2) at Stevenson-Princince Field Saturday evening.

After putting together a 3-2 home comeback victory over the Bears last year, the Saints got out to a lead in the first half by way of junior Bilal Hersi, who scored his third goal of the season with a far side chip in with help from sophomores Zach Gardner and Jesper Schone Vogtengen. Both teams entered intermission with six shots and two saves apiece.

It was the home team that broke through in the second half of action, with an equalizer coming in the 72nd minute off a strike outside the box and the game-winner happening in the 83rd minute off a set piece. Brown held a 17-11 shots advantage while drawing six of ten corner kick advantages.

Seven different Saints attempted a shot in the loss, with Hersi, Gardner, sophomore Jacob Sandun Arachchige-Jensen, and sophomore Erik Reis firing off two apiece. Graduate student goalkeeper Greg Monroe registered three saves while spending all 90 minutes in-goal, with Saturday's match tying him for the most appearances in goal in program history (70) and making him the program's leader in goalkeeper minutes logged (6,403).

After finishing a rigorous non-conference slate with a 4-3-1 mark, Siena will prepare to open MAAC play next weekend against a dangerous MAAC foe. The Saints will host Quinnipiac at Hickey Field on Wednesday, September 28, with kickoff set for 4 PM on Siena All-Access.
