LOUDONVILLE, NY – After being down 2-0 after the first two sets of the match, the Siena Volleyball team stormed back and fell just short in the fifth in a 3-2 loss to the Quinnipiac Bobcats at the UHY Center Saturday.
Â
Senior
Gracie Halley eclipsed the 1,000 career digs mark in the second set of the match, while
Emily Wunder became the second Saints player (
Sara Wagner) this season to collect a 20-kill match. Halley ended the match with 16 digs – a match-high for both sides. Wunder also added five blocks on the match, alongside
Monet Latunde.
Â
Sophomore
Ece Emrullah was strong for the Saints offensively, pumping in 11 kills while Wagner (14) and
Hailey Hinkel (11) each finished with double-digit digs. For Quinnipiac, Alexandra Tennon and Aryanah Diaz created havoc for the Bobcats as each collected a double-double. Tennon finished with 16 kills and 13 digs, while Diaz finished with 14 kills and 12 digs.
Â
Things looked to be all Quinnipiac through the first two sets, as the Bobcats took a 2-0 lead heading into the third set. As the third got moving and settled at a 10-10 score, Siena ripped off an 11-1 run with a hot streak from Wunder to take a 21-11 lead. The Saints closed out the set – which came on a 4-0 run as Wunder smacked two of the four kills to give Siena a 25-13 win.
Â
The Green and Gold then dominated the fourth set – as the Saints hit above .300 in each set – their highest marks of the match. Siena tied things at 2-2 after the commanding 25-15 victory in the third set, rolling into a fifth set for the third time this season.
Â
Thanks to many early Quinnipiac miscues, Siena jumped to a 5-0 lead in the fifth set. The Saints looked cued up for a possible victory, stretching their lead to a 12-7 lead after a kill from Wagner. From that point, Quinnipiac turned in a 6-0 run – which included four errors from the Saints – and took a 13-12 lead. Despite a kill from Wagner that re-tied the match at 13-13, another error and a kill from Tennon ended the match in favor of the Bobcats, 15-13.
Siena returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 25 at 3 p.m. when they play host to the defending MAAC Champion Fairfield Stags at the UHY Center. The game will be broadcasted and streamed on ESPN3.
