LOUDONVILLE, NY – Don't call it a comeback, call it three straight conference victories for Siena Men's Soccer. The Saints (3-7, 3-1) completed a remarkable second half comeback in their return home to Hickey Field with a 3-1 victory over MAAC foe Canisius (1-8-4, 0-3-2) Wednesday afternoon.
After beginning the 2023 season with a rigorous non-conference slate at 0-6, the Green and Gold have won three of their last four matches overall and have outscored opponents 7-2 during that stretch. The Saints also grew its unbeaten streak over the Golden Griffins to ten and four straight victories at home.
Despite controlling much of the possession and shot numbers in the first half of action, Siena let up a late first half header to Canisius' Dylan Rice, who scored from the front left corner of the box following a service just outside the box from Inder Thind.
Despite being down, Siena kept firing away and ultimately broke through in the 70
th minute with senior
Junior Kone receiving a pass from freshman
Lee Mara and stringing it 30 yards through the legs of the Canisius keeper into an empty goal.
The Saints found the back of the net just two and a half minutes later, with junior
Henrik Winkelmann feeding freshman
Ben Biton's second goal in as many games in the 72
nd minute of play. Kone's first collegiate multi-goal game closed out a string of three Saints strikes in just under eight minutes via another hookup with Mara which was started by sophomore
Thomas Sams in the 78
th minute.
Siena held a staggering 22-6 shots advantage during the win and attempted all nine corner kicks on the afternoon. Biton steadied nine different shot-takers with five attempts, while Kone, senior
Bilal Hersi, and freshman
Carl Melin each rattled off three shots apiece.
Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week
Bennet Glinder added four saves in-net defensively.
Continuing a stretch of three of four conference matches at home, Siena will head back out on the road this coming Saturday, October 14 to face head coach
Graciano Brito's alma mater in Quinnipiac in Connecticut at 2 PM.
