Valiant Comeback Effort Falls Short on Senior Day

Saints Erase Two Goal Second Half Deficit, But Can’t Overcome Reigning MAAC Champions

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Women's Soccer erased a two-goal second half deficit, but reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Champion Quinnipiac had the last word late to keep their perfect league record intact and spoil the Saints Senior Day 3-2 at Hickey Field.

Quinnipiac (9-3, 7-0) controlled the first 60-plus minutes, building what seemed to be an insurmountable advantage courtesy of goals from Olivia Scott (21') and Lily Schnieders (62'). Following Schnieders' seemingly back-breaking tally, the Bobcats held a 14-3 advantage in shots and a 9-0 margin in corners as they appeared to be well on their way to another decisive league victory.

But Siena (3-7-4, 2-2-3) took Quinnipiac's best punch, and punched right back on Senior Day.

The Saints responded with a pair of goals just 1:47 apart, stunning a defense which had bequeathed just three goals total spanning their 11-match win streak vs. MAAC opponents entering the day.

In the 69th minute, Annie Bagnall sent Megan Stowell off to the races on a long 1v1. The freshman finished beautifully across inside the right corner to put Siena back in business.

Moments later, Stowell worked a corner and then sent a cross in from the right which senior Gabby DeAngelis flicked home to send Hickey Field into bedlam. The goal marked just the second collegiate tally for the senior, giving DeAngelis a memorable moment on her Senior Day.

But when the Bobcats needed a response late, the defending MAAC Champions found one from Ella Gagno with just 8:34 remaining to keep their perfect league season alive and secure their 12th straight victory against conference competition.

Overall, Quinnipiac held a 15-9 advantage in shots and a 9-2 margin in corners. Angela Fini, one of eight Saints seniors honored prior to the match, made five saves during a busy afternoon.

Siena will look to bounce back Wednesday when they face another stiff test under the lights in Connecticut against Fairfield at 7 p.m. The contest continues a grueling four-match league stretch against each of the top-four teams in the MAAC Standings entering the weekend.
