BUFFALO, NY – Despite an inspiring, bounce-back effort by Siena Volleyball, the Saints succumbed in four sets to Canisius by the scores of 11-25, 25-22, 20-25, 17-25 on Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.
The Saints (2-18, 2-8 MAAC) started slow, committing more errors than kills to drop the opening set 25-11. The Golden Griffins (6-12, 4-6 MAAC) used a 5-0 run to capture a 6-2 lead and Siena got within 16-11 after a
Sara Wagner kill, but Canisius closed out the set with a 9-0 run behind the serving of Kara Zaucha, who compiled three aces in the spurt.
Siena roared back with its biggest turnaround between sets on the season by hitting .308 in the second to take it 25-22 and even play at one set apiece. After being knotted at five all, Siena reeled off four straight points with kills from
Sonja Meyer and Wagner as well an ace from freshmen
Oliwia Majtyka. Canisius battled back to lock the score at 20 apiece, but the Saints earned five of the next seven with an
Anny Montano kill, an ace from
Claire Isaksen, a kill from Wagner and a pair of errors from the Golden Griffins.
The third set had a back-and-forth tempo to it with neither side grabbing more than a four-point lead for the majority of the set. Siena led initially 8-6 on the strength of two kills from Montano. Four straight points from Canisius put them back on top 10-8 with two kills from Ella Loussia. The score was tied at 13 all after a kill by
Kayla Jones. Canisius used a pair of mini 3-0 runs to go up 23-18 and closed the set on a kill by Lauren Hubert.
In the fourth set, Siena took a 6-4 advantage after a kill and ace from Wagner. A pair of 4-0 runs by Canisius gave them a 18-12 lead including three straight kills by Loussia. Siena could get only within four points the remainder of the set.
Montano tied a career-high as a Saint with 14 kills, matching her output against Saint Peter's last month. Wagner put down 11 kills to go along with seven digs, two blocks and two aces.
Freshman libero
Payton Hinkle had a team-high 17 digs with seven assists. Majtyka had a team-best 14 assists and three aces.
